Want to start nursing again
« on: August 15, 2012, 21:27:20 pm »
Hi hi.  I have a six month old who was exclusively breast fed up
Until a month ago.  I started giving him a 8oz bottle of good start
Formula at night time.  I slowly increased his formula one feeding at a time each week until I wasn't nursing him anymore.  Well this is the second to
E I have found bloody streak with mucus in his diaper.  I have taken him to the doctor about this before and they recommended a different formula, and another doctor said it wasn't the formula but a digestion problem.  Anyway...I just want to go back to nursing because when he was being breastfed I had no issues with
Blood in his poop.  How do I get my supply back up?  Do I just pump???

Hello!
It will be completely possible to 'start again' as your supply will have been so established at 6 months. The milk actually takes a long time to 'dry up' at this stage. But...it will be hard work.

You will need to set aside a few weeks. Nurse him on demand - even take him to bed! After each BF pump either straight after or an hour after. Even if nothing comes out, pump for 10 mins. If he sleeps well at night, you may need to set your alarm to express every 3/4 hours, or dreamfeed him. The night feeds are the key to increasing your supply as hormonal levels are higher then.
Buy fenugreek herbs - they are completely safe. Take 3, 3 x a day. If you have a Holland and Barrett they are stocked there.
Visit your doctor, or buy over the counter, a digestive tablet called Domperidone. Again, it is completley safe. 30mg tab 1, 3 x a day. It 'restores' your supply - and if you had a good supply from the start this may be your answer.

As you stopped bfeeding him altogether, you will probably need to give him a top-up after each feed. Start with say 4oz and gradually decrease as he takes more from you. When he only takes 1-2oz, you can confidently 'ditch' the bottle and feed on demand for a few days until your supply has fully returned.

Good luck xxx

We've actually got a sticky about that: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=143453.0 with some good ideas.  I'd find a good lactation consultant to help you out.  It's totally possible.  I'd also be looking into the cause of the blood as well -- is there anything that you don't eat that your LO might be sensitive to?

Yes totally forgot to mention the sns - I got mine from amazon online. It will allow you to top him up naturally without use of the bottle while stimulating your body to make more milk. If you google jack Newman you will see one being used. It might also be worth you considering breast compression - again on jack newmans site xxxx

I just want to add about the domperidone.  It IS good for increasing supply PROVIDED you're not contraindicated for taking it.  In Canada it can no longer be administered for the purpose of increasing milk supply (this is a side effect of the medication rather than its actual purpose) as they have noted some issues with some mums taking the drug.

Please check it out with a Dr or at least have a google to see whether there might be a reason not to take it before starting.

And totally find a BF counsellor/lactation consultant/supportive Dr/HV/MW to help you through.
