7wo so sleepy all the time. Need suggestions please
« on: August 15, 2012, 23:27:47 pm »
My 7wo is sleepy all the time.  Almost always falls asleep after eating just for a little bit.  I almost always have to wake him up after the 3 hour mark to eat and then he falls asleep while he's eating.  I feel like he needs more sleep during the day but I know he needs to eat but then he is sleepy eating.  At night he eats around 8 and then sleeps until 2 when he wakes up to eat and then normally around 5 and then up again at 7.  But after his 7 am feed after he's been up for about an hour he goes to sleep and then is sleepy the rest of the day and doesn't have much more of a waketime.  The other day I only got 6 feedings in.  I have started doing the cluster feeding to get him more food and another feed.  I have tried do dreamfeed but since he is so sleepy it just doesn't happen.  Suggestions?

He's in a sleepy newborn stage still. Its normal ;) LO's often 'wake up' around 10-13 weeks and that when the A times comes into it a bit more. For now, let him sleep - your milk has lots of sleep-inducing hormones and things at the moment because baby needs to sleep to grow fast.

Hello OkalohomaMom!

Just to re-iterate what becj86 said really, it's normal!

My DS slept a lot at that age too and still does at 6 months really so don't worry :) Little babies (and they are still so little at that age!) do need a lot of sleep and often will only be awake for the time it takes them to feed and have a nappy change. My health visitor mentioned that babies brains grow over a million connections a day and the best time for them to do that is when they are asleep!

Hope we've been able to reassure you a bit :)

As long as LO is gaining weight and peeing enough, then he's getting enough food and you shouldn't worry too much about the drowsiness. If sleepiness is interfering with weight gain then you need to try some things to keep him awake while nursing. Otherwise, he needs something like 18 hours of sleep a day, which doesn't leave much awake time!
