How necessary is EASY? 11 week old baby
« on: August 22, 2012, 19:33:46 pm »
Hi all,

My daughter is 11 weeks old & I've been implementing EASY for a week. I didn't have any 'problems' to solve, but my friend recommended getting into a good routine. It's been going OK and I'm pleased with how the feeding times are more predictable now. However I'm wondering about the sleep.

My LO only naps for 45 minutes in the daytime. Today I tried shh/pat to try to get her into the next sleep cycle but I had just missed the best time & she had risen to full conciousness. She sucked the dummy OK in a kind of restful state, but only while I stay with her .. I could possibly lull her back into sleep as she seemed to repsond to shh/pat but my question is, is it worth it?!?! My back was aching after 10/15 mins leaning over her! By what I've read, it could take a while. I don't know whether to devote all this time into sleep training when a few of my friends with babies the same age say they are already STTN and they haven't implemented anything much by way of routine.

It feels like I'm making a bit of a fuss by staying with her during nap times. She even looks at me a bit puzzled. She's an angel baby temperament. Would she naturally learn to nap for longer periods with time?

Any thoughts on the matter would be much appreciated.

She is very young still and 45min naps are developmental and will get better when she is a bit older. Sleep training gets a whole lot easier around 5 months of age.
You could if you wanted to be more relaxed about EASY now and just keep the order of things, yk? Eat, then awake time, then sleep and that is already a good start and will give you a good ground for times you'd need to do sleep training.
I keep on hearing about those babies who STTN so early on, I personally didn't meet any of them (or their parents), but if there are those babies out there then I'd say that every baby is different, some are good sleepers and some need help. You baby is not less good because he doesn't STTN and you are not less mommy because of that.
I remember that in the early days there was a time I wasn't sure of EASY either so I dropped it and things got far worse for us so I went back to it.
I HTH for now, you can always post your day in an EASY format and we can have a look if something pops up, like not enough A time (therefore short naps) or something with BT.
Good luck!

Thank you very much for that response!

A recent problem I'm having is my DD is having bad reflux, I dunno if this is because she is being made to wait until she's properly hungry before eating?! (only 2.5 hrs though - she hasn't been able to do 3 hr EASY). She vomits loads of milk, gets really upset, then will only feed from her favourite boob.. refuses the right one...! Today she was so upset over it all that she fell asleep on the breast (she had done EASAES as only napped for 45 mins and didn't want to feed her right away). Maybe I should try feeding her right away upon waking even if has only had a short nap?
I tried more upright feeding positions but again she wouldn't have it.

Today is a bad day I think !! Also she has started to cotton-on to the wind down and cries a bit when I shut the blinds in the bedroom. There's no way I'd manage to get her down for naps without the dummy either, although she doesn't need to have it replugged when it falls out.... yet!

I'll try to make a note of my EASY timings over the next few days.

Thanks a lot.

Hon, if she is suffering from Reflux I think you gotta see your ped., she is suffering a lot if it is reflux and there is meds that can help with that.
Anyway, till Reflux is under control days will be hard, with or without EASY and you can't do sleep training till it's treated.
