normal when weaning?
« on: August 27, 2012, 14:20:40 pm »
I am starting the weaning process with my 4.5 month old daughter. We have had about 3 days doing 2 bottles of 3ozBM mixed with 2oz formula and it's been going well. I've essentially dropped one nursing session altogether, and pumped the other one.

What I'm wondering is ... is it normal to feel a bit "off" during weaning? ie. run down, achey all over .... I did the same gradual weaning with my older one, and don't really remember how I felt - tbh, I only remember waking in a puddle of breast milk one morning! haha.

Thanks!

Do you have any soreness in your breast as well?  Or any red patches?  Any fever?

breasts are tender, but I think mostly because they're full and still adjusting to dropping one feeding. Not sure of a fever .... took tylenol this morning first thing. No red patches. Am I destined for the leper colony? :P

LOL!  Not leper colony, was just wondering whether, because you're weaning, whether milk has begun to "pool" in your breast and if you might have a bit of mastitis coming on.  Keep an eye on your temperature.  If your breasts get any more tender, any red triangles, fever, then please get yourself to the Dr for some antibiotics.

The normal advice to ward off mastitis as it's starting is to feed as much as you can, but probably not as feasible if you're trying to wean. :-\

At 4.5m, it's not all that unusual to see a dip in pumping output because the way milk is produced is changing, but keep an eye out :)

yes, I remember reading something about that too ... I didn't pump when weaning with my 1st daughter because my supply was so low anyway (I was on medication to help it, and had weaned off it around 4 months, so by time we started formula, it was almost a wash anyway .... plus, she was more than happy to take formula, whereas my youngest is taking to it a bit slower ...)
k, will do! thanks!

There's also some hormonal shifts associated with weaning, so that could be part of it too.
