Night waking - please help!
« on: August 30, 2012, 15:15:28 pm »
Hi, after sleeping through the night for 6 months, by 16 month old has started waking several times a night (most nights) and very early in the morning. They aren't regular wake ups, occurring at all different times in the night. I was tempted to try the wake to sleep method for the mornings, but he's already waking himself up an hour before and crying out, then putting himself back to sleep.

When he wakes at night he will typically only accept mummy. When daddy goes in, he just cries louder. He will usually lay down but make little protesting noises to make sure I'm still there. Sometimes I lay out our fold out mattress and sleep in there too so that my husband can at least get some sleep (no point in both of us being exhausted). He still wakes up those nights, but I'm there to shush him so it's not too bad.

We are flirting with the one nap transition and if he only takes one nap he goes to bed easily at 7pm and tends to sleep in a little later, but he's cranky most of the day. On two nap days he fights bedtime, going to bed closer to 8pm and seems to wake up earlier (5:30 the last two mornings).

His general EASY looks like this:

Two nap days:
5:30  - 5:45 wake up
6:30 - 7 breakfast
7- 8:30 activity
8:30/9 - 10:30/11 sleep
11:15-11:45 eat
11:45 - 1/1:30 activity
1:30-3 sleep
3-5:30 activity (with snack in there somewhere)
5:30-6 eat
6-7:30/8 activity/bath/books/mayhem
8 - sleep

one nap days:
6:30 wake up
6:45-7:30 eat
7:30 - 10/10:30 activity (struggle to keep him awake)
10:30- 12/12:30 sleep
12:30-1 eat
1-5:30 activity (with snack, struggle to keep him awake around 3)
5:30 eat
6-7 bath/books/bed

Please help me figure this out! I work full time and mama's tired!
Thank you so much for your insight!!!

Is he teething? EWings, wanting mummy and irregular NWIngs make me think it could be that.
Having said that at 16 months he is well on the way to 1 nap.
How many days in a row have you done 1 nap for?? Really if he is to manage on 1 nap he needs to be able to handle 4.5 A time at a minimum so he might not be quite there yet.
What I would do is stick with 2 naps but shorten one of them much more so maybe do a 30 min am nap and then a longer one in the pm i.e. 1.5. So your day might be.
A - 6am
Nap 1 - 9.30-10am
Nap 2 - 1.15-2.45pm
BT - 7pm
What do you think?
