6.5 month LO nap changes
« on: September 22, 2012, 17:07:33 pm »
Hello,

My 6.5 month old used to be a very consistent napper, napping 2 hours twice a day plus a late afternoon cat nap.  Over the last month or so, her long naps have gradually shortened to 1.5 hours, which I think is age appropriate for her.  However, in the last 10 days or so she has started waking up after 1 hour and will not go back to sleep.  She still takes her cat nap late in the afternoon.  In the last week or so, she has also started sleeping through the night, finally (fingers crossed).  Some days, she seems just fine with only 1 hour naps and other days she is tired and cranky.

At home (4 days/week) she is on a 4 hour EASY schedule.  Her day starts at 6am when I have to give her the reflux meds, she then eats at 6:30am.  She naps around 8:30 and 12:30.  She will also take a cat nap around 4:45-5 for about 45min.  She eats again at about 5:45-6p.  Bedtime routine (bedtime bottle and books) starts at 7p and she is down for the night around 7:15.  My husband does a DF around 10:30p.

At daycare (3 days/week), they report that she is a champion napper but they also have their own schedule (despite my attempts).  At daycare, she naps from about 7:30-9:30am.  Eats at 9:30 and then again at 12:30.  She naps again from about 1p-3p then eats around 3:15p.  She gets picked up from daycare around 4pm and usually doesn't take her cat nap these days as she just isn't that tired.  The rest of the evening routine remains the same.

Is a 1 hour nap sufficient for a 6.5 month old LO?  Part of me thinks that she needs more sleep since she still sleeps for 2 hours twice at daycare.  But on the other hand, many days she does just fine with only the two 1 hour naps.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

It's probably about the time to drop the cat nap and start going to just 2 naps per day by increasing the A times. That might lengthen her naps.

How do I know its time to drop the cat nap and move to 2 naps?

If the daycare schedule is going well, maybe stick with that schedule on your days off? I had to do that once my DS started daycare. It's tweaked a bit, but mostly the same as his daycare schedule.

I agree hun, she probably needs an A time increase to get longer naps - this is the age that most LOs are dropping the catnap ;)  Early bedtimes can be key to getting you through the transition, if the second nap is finishing a bit early in the afternoon to get you through to normal bedtime!

There's a support thread for the 3-2 nap transition here: Anyone want to talk about the 3-2 Nap transition? Part 2
