9 mo short napping?
« on: September 26, 2012, 08:32:15 am »
Hey guys. My lo has been short napping for the at month or so, so I'd like some advice to move him forwards again? He's historically done nice 1.5 hour naps, never got to the mythical regular 2 hour naps, but definitely better than now! He started refusing various naps,so I stretched his a time. We now get no np refusal, but nps are often short? Easy is currently:

A 7.15
E bf 8
E solids 9
S 11
A 11.45
E bf 12
E solids 1300
S 3
A 4
E bf 4.30
E solids 5.45
E bottle 7
S 7.15

He is sleeping really well at night, do you think 1.45 day sleep is just all he needs?

It sounds pretty low - but is he happy on it?  Part of me says if it isn't broken, don't fix it!  But I'd suspect if he does this for too long you'll get some OT creeping in....

How about pushing out his morning A time to 4h?  And hope for a 1.5h nap?  Then another 4h and cap the second nap with a shorter A time to bed afterwards?

He is generally happy on it, though exhausted at bed time. I think pushing first a time is a good plan - historically his am naps were always much more reliable than his pm naps, plus of we go out, it tends to be in the pm!

If he manage nearly 4h A time before a good am nap, you should be good to manage the rest of the day on a quick catnap out and about if necessary, then BT a couple of hours afterwards :D

That would be ideal. Just feel like he's so young for such a long a time!

It's high but not unheard of.  Is he very mobile yet?  Our A times got ridiculously high for age before DD was crawling and pulling up, but have since reduced slightly (or at least become more age-appropriate).

He is not as mobile as his mates, he hauls himself around on his front, but that's it.

This morning 4 hours a time lead to 30 mins nap.
Now, 4 hours later, I'm listening to him refuse to nap again......

Do you think it's just lack of mobility means he's not tired enough? Even if he drops off now, I'll have to wake him after 30 mins or he won't go to sleep at bedtime, so that willbe two thirty min naps!

It could be contributing.............

Don't forget you need to shorten A time after a short nap - would have thought 3h or so after a 30 min am nap would be about the limit to prevent OT ;)

He went down at 3 hours a time.....was still whining at four hours. Got hysterical at 4.15 and I went in and did a bit of apop with some feeding, he then had an hour's nap on my lap. Not slept on my lap since he was three months old for goodness sake! That took us to 5pm, which is too late for our 7.15 bedtime. Ugh.

Help. Still no further forwards. Today we got a 50 min am nap after 4hr 15 a time. We then spent all afternoon out in he buggy, giving ample opportunity to sleep. He finally fell asleep after a further 5 hours, taking him way too close to bedtime! What is going on? Is he transitioning? should I keep him up even longer before am nap to try and get a longer nap, and if not at least make the a time to bed shorter?

Sounds like you may be getting into the early beginnnings of 2-1 territory........you're still on the early side and I would try to hold onto 2 naps as long as you possibly can.

Have a look at these to see if there's anything that might help:
from 2 to 1 nap - how, when and the bumps
10/ 11mo sleep gone wonky? Read this first!

I wouldn't do any more big leaps in A time just yet though - that's a big jump he's done in a short space of time from 3h45 to 4h15 and you might get into OT problems.....

Might be worth a post on the 2-1 transition support thread to see what the experts (;)) there think?
