7 month old angel turned little devil!
« on: September 29, 2012, 23:22:22 pm »
Hey everyone! I post this as one exasperated mummy! For the last 4-5 weeks we have been 'battling' every night with our 7 month old dd (I will add at this point she was 8 weeks prem but developmentally is right on track for actual age). She has always been such a good little girl, I mean I'm realistic and know most babies don't sleep right through but I thought we would be closer to that now than totally regression (may I say it's tougher now than new born!). Willow has never had any probs  getting/putting herself to sleep until recently. She has always slept in her own room from  12 wks and would just literally conk out only waking once to feed then would go right back off to sleep. I will admit I've been fearful of nighttime crying so would rush in at slightest stirring to replying dummy with a 'catch her before she wakes' mentality and recognise I've prob created some accidental parenting there, anyway here's her routine etc and any help would by much appreciated!:)

How old is your child? 7 month one week (actual) 5 month 1 week (corrected)
What’s his/her daily routine?
E-8am porridge/cereal and a little formula (has been fussy with bottles for 3 months! Teething?!)
A- play/walk
S- 10.00-10.30 naps have reduced considerably since probs started. Sleeps in stroller
E- mid morning snack and then lunch at 12
A-play/visit family/walk etc
E- sometimes has a little extra formula if seems fussy/hungry
S- 2.30ish- this can be anywhere from 30mins to 2 hours!
E-4.30 dinner
A- play and then bath at 6.30- willow is extremely upset at bath times and its to the point I dread bath times everynight!
E- 8oz bottle
S-in cot by 7.30- sometimes goes straight to sleep other times have to stay in room with hand on chest, replugging dummy and give comfort blanket. Will sleep for 1 hour then wakes up screaming, restart process, calms almost immediately on physical contact of hand on chest and dummy/comforter. Very rarely need to to pu/pd (and if i do she arches her back a d flails arms like she doesnt want to be held!)as settles quickly. Awake again at 9pm, then midnight, 4am and sometimes. 6am. I do occasionally give extra feed if she won't settle... Sometimes she will drink it all other times only take a couple of oz. then will usually sleep till 8-9am .
What’s nap routine? As above
How long are naps? As above
What's bedtime routine? Time?as above
Do you bottle or breastfed??formula
How much? or how long?
If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed)
How many wakes per night?5,6,7,8....
What’s your LO like when waking at night? Cry's at first and settles when I do the above
How long is he/she up? 20 mins to 1.5 hours :(
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Crying
Or is it a mantra cry? Not sure... It usually escalates if I leave her longer than 5-10mins
What have you tried to settle?? As above. I am strict with routine and also have never took her into our bed. I occasionally rock her to sleep in stroller. Or take for walk.
What do you do for A time and how long is it? As above... Can be 1.5 hours on a good day.
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? No teeth yet but I've attributed a lot of her behaviour to teething and when I've used pain relief there has been no difference in nw
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? Dummy and comforter next to face to snuggle in to
Do they have a lovie? As above I think.

Thank you and look forward to hearing your suggestions x

It looks like she's having quite a bit of solids with milk as an accompaniment rather than milk being her main nutrition source - how much milk is she taking in in a 24hr period?

At this point, she probably needs longer A time in the morning to get a good long nap and hopefully kick the day off well sleep-wise.
I'd start with moving her up to 3hr awake time before PD for the first nap.

Hi! Thanks for your quick reply. She is well established on solids as was weaned at 4 months on advice of specialist nicu consultant. This is apparently routine for preemie babies. She went right off we milk/bottles prior to weaning and at one point was only taking 5-8 oz a day!!! Would cry when sucking on bottle. She is prolly having 12 ozs o mild per day at min.
She seems to get quite very grumpy on a morning and perhaps I am putting her to sleep too early? But she jut seems so tired. I will defo try keepin her awake longer. Thanks for your advice. X

(((Hugs))) Willowsmum - sorry you're having a tough time.  Agree with bec that's not very much milk - you really want to be looking at 20-24oz minimum.  Don't have experience with bottles but wonder if you might need a different teat/bottle type to encourage her to drink more?  Have you posted on the bottle feeding board for advice?

I do occasionally give extra feed if she won't settle... Sometimes she will drink it all other times only take a couple of oz. then will usually sleep till 8-9am .
I really keep going back to hunger here.  Formula has more calories and more fat than solids -- it wouldn't be unusual for a baby to still have a nf at 7 months, let alone a 5 month old.  If you feed her at the first waking, will she settle back down for the rest of the night or be up again?

At this point, she probably needs longer A time in the morning to get a good long nap and hopefully kick the day off well sleep-wise.
I'd start with moving her up to 3hr awake time before PD for the first nap.
I think this is true as well.  She sounds dreadfully OT by BT, which is probably why bath time is so hard right now.  The awake at 9PM could definitely be some overtiredness.

Ah thanks so much peeps! Any advice is appreciated. I initially started out bf-ing and she had soooo much trouble (no sucking reflex when born until 7 weeks old and by then I started to dry up due to the distress and frustration at every feed, as willow would be at every feed coz she couldn't latch on *sad times :(((
Anywho, she usually doesn't need topping up until about 1-3am and then she will occasionally go back over but usually we get a good couple of hours before we start the process again... I really do try to get more milk into her as I constantly worry its not enough. I feel like everytime I see the health visitors I go on about it but they don't seem bothered as she is on a vitamin supplement, gaining weight very well and has no probs  on a varied solid diet. I wish I had more control over that situation because if i did I would still be bf-ing and she would only just be getting used to baby rice about now :( never mind, it is what it is. I will defo try different teats (duh- why didn't I think of that?!)
I kept her awake until 11am today and she slept for about 45 mins and had about 1hour in the pm- so defo better. I bathed her a little earlier too and that made bath time a little less stressful (for everyone involved) and then just had a little wind-down cuddle time after before bottle (which she drained!).
My rationale for trying to knock night feedings on head was to get milk intake up durin the day an also I was worried she was using it as comfort due to not drinking much before falling back to sleep.
I've bought baby whisperer sleep book so hopefully this explains a bit more about OT-ness as I've always worried he won't sleep at night if has a really long daytime nap :-/ why don't babies come with instruction manuals??! Ha ha...
Thanks again! <3

Hey- thanks for your concern. Things are a little worse if anything as willow has caught a cold so she is not herself. Last night was good until 11-12pm then the was maybe 8-10 (I lost count) wakings. I'd like to say this is because she's not feeling too good but it really isn't that unusual. Just what we would call a 'bad night' a 'good night' is only 2-3 wakenings. I mentioned it to the health visitor at clinic on Monday and she said I should gradually put her to bed awake with contact to start with(as I have been doing) and then gradually work my way out of the room. I'm so tired as I can't get a little nap during the day as she usually wakes up a couple of times during her am and pm naps. I'm going back to work soon and just can't imagine how I will cope if things are still like this. And to think I used to complain about getting up once a night to give her a bottle a couple of months ago... I'd give anything to be back there. I feel so lost with all of this :(

Hi- I read the reflux article and there are some similarities there... Interesting to think about. I will mention it to health visitor at next visit. Would reflux just start all of a sudden at 4ish months though- could it be related to weaning at this time?
I'm almost certain there are teeth on way, her little gums are rock hard and you can feel teeth just sittin there waiting to pop through. It just seems to be going on for ages... I just wish for her sake she could be more peaceful and rested at night. X

Reflux tends to get worse til about 4 months of age... so it often looks like its started around this age when really its been around, just not as severe or as noticeable earlier on. It could also be that change to formula, as it takes longer to digest, so if its in her tummy longer, there's more chance of it being refluxed back up again. Reflux also flares with teething.

Ahhhhh... I see! This is all beginning to sound very fitting to our situation. Everyone keeps saying 'it's teething' and that it will go back to normal after they come through but I just don't feel that's it. Maybe mummy's instinct or something but I'm not convinced! I am most certainly gonna check this out. Last night was dreadful. Slept from 7 until 8.30pm, went into room, put dummy in and gave comfort blanket, went back down until 12 and was awake until 1am- gave bottle as crying and wondered if may help settle. But I think this gave her a second win as she then played and fussed until 3.30am. Went in when she had been crying a couple of minutes and had to hold her arms down until she fell back to sleep as she was thrashing around and pulling her dummy out every 2 seconds like it was a game. Woke up at 4.45 am and then slept through til 8.30am... We're exhausted! X

Check this board out - lots of info, support and advice from mums who've BTDT with reflux: Colic, Reflux, & Crying

I think its worth checking out the the doc, reflux is more common in premmies too.

Also wondering how you're going with increasing A times? It can be hard with nights that aren't particularly restorative.

Thanks for that- will have a peek at that info. Well I am certainly determined and hae been managing a good 3 hour awake time for a few days now ad have noticed her am nap has been much longer and seemingly a deeper sleep... Getting 1hr-1.5hrs... Awesome! Her pm naps a still a bit sketchy she will maybe have 30-40mins. She seems wide awake now after her dinner through til bath time and has resisted the catnap (despite trying) pre-bath. HOWEVER- I have amazing news... Last night she woke up at 12midnight and I thought there is no way I'm having a night like last night so decided to go hardcore and did pu/pd as textbook. It took maybe 30times then she just grumped to sleep AND THEN... Next thing I know it's 8.30am and she awake playing in her cot!!!! I know it's just one night but it's the best she's done in weeks! Fluke do you think? I hope not!!! (Very refreshed and happy mummy and daughter!) xx

Great that you're getting some better naps with those longer A times. Generally with A times at 3hr, the catnap disappears anyway, so once you get that PM nap tweaked a bit more, you should be able to do away with the catnap :)

Yay for a good night!
