8wk old short naps
« on: October 13, 2012, 10:24:28 am »
Hello

My 8 wk old DD2 was napping well (I was often waking her to feed 3 hourly during the day) however for the past 2 weeks naps have become shorter and now all naps are between 20 and 40 mins.  We use a dummy and I was replacing that to extend naps but now that doesn't work.  Our EASY looks something like this

6 BF - she is really quick to feed, 15 mins tops with burping (she has enough wet and dirty nappies and often spits up after a feed so I assume she is getting enough)

6.15 Try to keep activity low key as thought 20 min naps were due to overstimulation plus she is usually OT from not napping well - sit in bouncer/lie on playmat/talking with Mum and DD1/read a book/tummy time/nappy change.  A time can last anywhere from 30-60 mins

7 Swaddle, dummy and lay in bassinette awake and she can send herself off to sleep.  After that 40 min sleep cycle I then spend the rest of the time trying to get her back to sleep.  Shh/pat is difficult to do as DD1 is 19 months and follows me everywhere.  She will throw tantrums if I spend more than a minute trying to get DD2 back to sleep, hence why I have just been replugging the dummy.

9 BF - A - S
12 BF - A -S
3 BF - A - cat nap (20-30 mins)
4.30 BF - Bath, Bed.  She often needs a bit more help to get to sleep at bedtime and DH is usually home so I can shh/pat.
10/11 BF (she wakes for this, I can't seem to do a dream feed, she just wont attach)
2/3am BF
5/5.30am wakes so have been replugging with dummy.

I'm beginning to wonder if the dummy is a prop, I put her to bed an hour ago and have had to replug her 3 times in the last 15 mins.  I may also be responding too early, I have trouble working out the cries (I have printed out the descriptions of the different types of cries and keep trying to work them out).  The other day I was on the phone so didn't get to her when she woke early from a nap and she ended up going back to sleep!

Do you think I need to shh/pat to extend naps?  I tried for 20 mins today when she woke early and she didn't seem any closer to going back to sleep (I didn't have the stamina to go any longer...I spent hours upon hours shh/patting DD1 when she was younger and am a little traumatised for it).  I also can't do this consistently during the week at the moment because of DD1, but have family staying in about a weeks time so would be able to dedicate the time then.

TIA

Are there any signs of discomfort?

I wonder if she needs a bit of an A time increase - the average for a 2-month old is about 1hr15, so if she's going down after an hour she may not be tired enough to sleep more than one sleep cycle (c. 40 mins). But if she has several short naps, she'll end up OT and start doing 30 min naps.

I'd try stretching the first A time out by 10-15 mins - what do you think? If you get a short nap and can't extend, you'll probably need to reduce the next A time to avoid OT.

I had previously tried increasing A time after looking at sample EASYs on the forum and that resulted in 20 min naps so assumed she was OT.  Some A time is only 30 mins as she has had such a poor nap prior to that that she doesn't last very long.  I tried again this morning to increase A time - she lasted 1hr 10 mins (and really needed to go to bed at that point) but still only had 40 mins!  She doesn't seem to be in any pain.

I would stick with it - it can take a few days for them to adjust to the longer A time. It may be that she needs even slightly longer to get a good nap, but usually best to increase gradually :)

So now we are down to 5-30 min naps! I thought it had something to do with the dummy falling out so started weaning yesterday but the naps were the same length. I managed to sh/pat back to sleep on a few occasions but she still didnt even complete a full sleep cycle! Then became hysterical last night at bed time so the dummy came back! She had a good night.and woke just before 7 this morning, was asleep by 8.10ish w sh/pat, woke at 8.37 and I went in 8.50 when she started crying out. Tried sh/pat but was really annoyed by it. Fed at 9 because I didnt know what else to do and wanted to rule out hunger, wasn't that interested. Back into bed and tried sh/pat but would go all sleepy then start to wriggle and cry. Just gave in and gave her dummy and she is settled with eyes closed but not really sleeping. I was so motivated and convinced.yesterday that the dummy was the problem but now.i.just feel like.I'm going insane!

Hugs hun. What's your EASY now - are you aiming for 1hr15 A time? How many weeks is she now?

I do still wonder about discomfort - anything on this link sound familiar?  Reflux 101 - General reflux information

I have the same thing going on with my DD and at the same period my boys went thru this too. I am beginning to think it's an age thing. They start sleeping great at night but the days go downhill for a bit.

That's a good point about it possibly being developmental - there is a big mental leap around now :)
