11 month old won't nap HELP PLEASE!!!!
« on: October 22, 2012, 13:31:06 pm »
Schedule

11 months old full term weighed 5 pounds 11 ounces

wakes at 6-6:30 feed a bottle (he is on Almond milk because of spitting up and soy gives him runny diapers)
we just made that switch his naps have never been consistent due to picking up and transporting my children to school.
But it has never been this bad.
He has 6 teeth and they have all come in as two's. He gets really fussy and just when the naps are sort of back on track he regresses and a tooth pops up.

7:00 eats a banana and waffle
8:30 I lay him back down for a nap (he cries and won't go to sleep, I pat on him every so many minutes but still continues to cry)
If he does eventually go to sleep he won't go to sleep until he cries for 45 minutes to an hour.
He sleeps with a blabla lovie, he has no paci, he is on no medications. Very happy baby when he is up.

So as you can see the morning is always rough and so the rest of the day continues that way because he can't get his nap in and gets over-tired even if he does eventually go to sleep. He usually only sleeps 20 minutes at that time because he is just over-tired.
I try to keep the rest of the day on a schedule as the 4 hour easy but it is always off because of the morning.

Please help, I was wondering if he is just ready to switch over to the one nap a day and I'm laying him down too early. He just does not seem sleepy?
His bed time is 7:00 always and has no problems with going to sleep or nightwakings.

any advice would be great. He eats lunch and dinner. and is switched over to table foods.

Hi hun, you're trying for that first nap much too early. Most LOs this age can do around 3.5-4 hours A time so if your LO is awake for the day at 6, I wouldn't be putting him down earlier than 9.30. Then perhaps a second nap around 2.30, capped to preserve bedtime if need be. What are the timings for the school runs you have to work around? He won't be on a 4 hour EASY anymore, you just fit feeds in around the two naps, generally only 3-4 milk feeds at this age. Is he also taking formula?

Also, can I just check you mean that he's mantra crying - or you're with him when he's crying? Here we don't advocate any sort of CC.

He's probably heading for the 2-1 nap transition, but that can take a few months so I wouldn't think he's ready for one nap yet - here are a few links to check out:

He is now doing almond milk. I just started transitioning him. The runs are at 8:00 and 11:00 and would have to be leaving house at 2:45. I think that is probably the bad part is the 2:45 run.
What does CC mean?
When he goes to sleep I let him cry and go back in and do the shh.. pat numerous times. Thank you for your quick response.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, cc = controlled crying. So it's fine to leave him to self settle, but if he cries an "I need you cry", go straight in to him and shh/pat rather than leaving him for a set number of minutes. I think it sounds like that's what you're doing :)

What time are you back from that afternoon school run? If you can push out the morning A time and get a good morning nap, you could probably do a short nap after the school run, so something like this:

WU: 6/6.30
nap: 9.30 - 11
nap: 3 - 3.45/4
bed: 7

Or if that won't work, you could go for a capped am nap and try to get a long pm nap in before the school run, then slightly earlier bedtime if need be:

WU: 6/6.30
nap: 9.30 - 10.15
nap: 1.15 - 2.45
bed: 6.45

That would work better with the 11am run too. What do you think?

That sounds great, I will try tomorrow. and let you know. So I should go in his room and shh/pat and only leave when he stops?

Is he generally an independent sleeper, hun? (ie, can he put himself to sleep without crying for you?) Do you know what his mantra cry sounds like?

What’s a mantra cry?

If he's crying a mantra cry and trying to self-settle, it's fine to leave him, although I would tend to go back in after about 10 minutes and see if I could help to settle with shh/pat. But if it's not a mantra cry, you need to stay.

Once you have the A times right and LO is tired enough to sleep, it should take much less time for him to settle.
