6 month old nw and ew
« on: October 22, 2012, 19:20:58 pm »
Hi
I have previously posted on the sleep forum and got some very good feedback and help.
My Lo is 6 months and has just extended his naps from 45 min to 1.5-2 hrs and dropped the catnap.
He has reflux, is on ranitidine (we have docs on wed to see if it needs upping)
I think it is under control no fussing during feeds, no hiccups anymore, never spitting up anyway mostly happy but is teething although has been teething since 3 months.
He has been having between 6-8oz of milk at each feed apart from Bt and has between 26 oz-30oz per day.
He self soothes and never has paci in bed.
He got himself into 2 naps a day and is not ot at bedtime.
His easy looks like this on a perfect day.

6am Wu
E 7am ish cereal.
E 8.45am milk 6 oz
S 9am-10.30/11am

E 12pm lunch
E 1.45pm milk 6oz
S 2pm-3.30pm

E 4 pm tea
Bt routine bath, massage bottle. 8-9 oz asleep at 6.45-7pm

Night feed between 12.30- 2.30 am 6 oz

Now the problems are he wakes up between 4-5 am and it is a struggle to get him back to sleep he starts blowing raspberry then starts crying, it can take up to an hour for him to go back to sleep.
If at all.
I don't mind the nightfeed but waking at that time is getting to be a problem, he doesn't really want to eat maybe 2oz and I can shh pat for 45 min with him not really sleeping or if I bring him into bed with me he will go back to sleep till 6 am ish
I have tried an earlier Bt and it makes no difference and can't keep him up past his Bt cos of dropped catnap and gets ot.
He is going into his own room this coming weekend and really do.t want to be out of bed countless times after 4am

He is a happy little boy and I am happy with hid daytime routine.

Does anyone have any suggesions.

Thanks x

I don't have help to offer but we are going through a weird phase to but we are working on getting rid of the catnap. You aren't alone. It seems like sleep goes strange at 6 months by seeing posts on here. Maybe the awake time before bed is too long? You are getting amazing naps so I would think your A time is good. Hope someone else can guide you.

Hi thanks for your post.
The naps have only started to be that length in last 2 weeks after nearly 2 months of extending them. Nearly drove me crazy.
Today he did have the cat nap 4.20-5 pm as we have builders in so he had a short 2nd nap so will see how tonight is.

I also forgot to mention he is starting to crawl so moves around his cot all night and gets stuck in the corner (its a cot bed so quite big but he still gets all over the place) so I think that is adding to the wake ups.

Am not sure what to do if a timevis too long to bed time as he seems to only need 11hrs at night and is happy with 2 1/2-3 hrs nap during the day.
Thanks for your help x

^^^this could be the main cause of your NWs -- your routine looks quite good -- the 11 hour night is ok at his age, many babies do great on the 11 hour night.  There is a lot of developmental stuff that goes on at 6 months as well as a growth spurt -- it could be any of it quite honestly.  I'll keep thinking, wondering if there's something I'm missing.

Hi Erin.

Thanks for your response. I did think that could be part of the reason but short of tieing him to the bed not much I can do lol.
He has developed a lot recently found his voice, started moving etc. We did have a week two weeks ago where he woke up in morn and stayed awake for an hr then slept till 7 am.

Well last night was the same even with his going to bed a little later.
S 7pm-1.30am
E 6 oz milk
S 2am-4.45 resettled till 5.30 ish. Finally got up at 6am
We went through the growth spurt last week, he always hits them 1 week early like clockwork.
I wouldn't mind the 5.30 Wu if he wasn't waking around 4 ish every am.
Do you think anything is pointing to reflux I can't spot anything but don't want to try sleep training if it could be reflux related.
The 5am wu ends up throwing the routine cos he is tired by 8 am.
Anyway am rambling now
Thanks for the input. X

My LO is just over 5 months and doing the same thing. He wakes between 4:30-5 and wants to go bac to sleep but can't. I have to go in and resettle. He'll sleep till usually 5:30 but then he's up. Makes for a long day so I feel your pain.. I think he's just a low sleep needs baby and he's gonna have to work it out himself.

Wakings in the second half of the night can be related to discomfort, so it could be.  I always second guess stuff like that ::)
Maybe wait until after you see the doc tomorrow to worry about sleep training?  I know reflux meds are weight sensitive, so if he's grown recently, it may need upping.
