Early Wake Up and Cant get passed 45min naps
« on: November 01, 2012, 09:58:11 am »
Hi

I'm new the forums and need some help with pu/pd and what to do about early wakes in the morning.

Daniel is 14 weeks old and he has never slept that well.

Early wake ups:  he tends to wake once or twice in the night, he takes a good feed and goes right back to sleep but recently he has been waking at 2ish (going back to sleep) and then at 6am and not wanting to go back to sleep. I don't know whether to feed him and start our day Early but he will be an hour off of his routine or to make him wait till 7am but then he is tired already.

Second naps: In the beginning he napped all the time as most new Born's do but the older he got the more alert he got - not a day goes by without someone saying 'wow isn't he alert' he looks at everything and while that is lovely he tends to get tired quickly and overtired within seconds - its seems his sleep window is open and shut within 5Min's. He had colic and I felt so sorry for him that I let him sleep on me being cuddled, I rocked him, put him in the sling and walked for hours with the pram but now the colic is over I need him to learn how to sleep by himself. I have started PU/PD and its day 4, he tends to go off to sleep within 15Min's, I 'shh' for about 20Min's until he is settled and at the moment i stay in the room just to see what he does. He will then start string at the 30min mark and by 40/45min he is wake and screaming. It then takes about 20min to get him back off to sleep but he doesn't stay asleep for longer than 5-10Min's. How long should I keep the PU/PD going? right up to next feed?

In 4 days he has done really well I just need a little guidance on getting him back to sleep.

Thanks all

Hi and welcome!

I wouldn't use PU/PD at this age hun - it's too stimulating for little babies and is really meant as a last resort for older babies when nothing else is working (the first BW book isn't terribly clear on this, if that's the one you've read!) Have you tried using pat/shh?

How long is he up for before a nap? At this age, A times should be about 1hr30. Can you post your routine in EAS format and we can see if anything needs a tweak?

You mention colic - are there any signs of discomfort still?
