Worried I've got the naps the wrong way round?!
« on: November 01, 2012, 11:32:09 am »
Hi all,

I've been mainly posting in the NW section and had some very helpful advice which has improved our nights tremendously (thank goodness!) but now I'm wondering if anyone has any advice about our current nap situation.

My LO is just over 11 months and for the past month seems to be headed towards the 2-1 transition. In the advice of the lovely ladies in the NW section I've been capping his morning nap at 45 mins and letting him have as long as he likes in the pm (usually around 1.5 hrs). This has really helped reduce his NWs and he's even sttn a few times (which he's NEVER done before) so I'm very happy.

My only concern is that his long nap is now fairly late in the afternoon. This doesn't seem to mess up BT at all which I'm relieved about, but I'm just not sure how he can work towards one nap unless his long nap is in the morning and he pushes it back and drops the pm nap? From what I've been reading on the 2-1 thread it seems this is usually how it works...they drop an afternoon CN and push back a morning long nap, but we have the naps the other way around.

Should I try lengthening the am nap and capping the pm one or do you think I'm making a problem out of nothing and it'll work out on its own? I'm scared to mess up his sleep now that it's JUST got bearable, but I don't want to store up problems for the future if that's what's happening.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading  ;D

Hi there,

having a capped am nap is a fairly common way to get through the 2-1. What happens is as your pm nap gets too late in the day, you cap the am nap further - to 30 mins - which will mean you have to reduce the next A time and bring the pm nap earlier. Then as A times lengthen again, you cap to 20 mins, reduce the second A again, bring the pm nap back...and then eventually drop the catnap altogether and pull the pm nap back to around midday. Does that make sense?

Sounds like you're doing ok atm, but if you need more specific advice when you get to that stage just post your routine here and we'll see if we can help!

You might also want to pop onto the 2-1 support thread: Anyone want to talk about the 2-1 transition? Thread #23

Thank you!

That's reassuring. I'll continue as we are at the moment as BT is being preserved but if that pm nap starts creeping later then I'll definitely have a go at capping back further. So nice to have a plan :-)
