15 week old stopped napping
« on: November 11, 2012, 12:18:22 pm »
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help - my boy used to nap really well but has recently started to really fuss at nap time. We have a routine which consists of a lullaby, turning the lights down, swaddling and cuddling, plus some white noise if he needs it. He's completely stopped taking dummy for som reason, which would always help him calm down if he needed (shush-pat works in m arms but not lying down).

Although we're following the same routine, as soon as i put him down he now just cries and cries and bucks his whol body (I'm certain it's not wind). He calms when I pick him up, but often starts crying again in my arms. In the end he falls asleep in my arms exhausted from all the crying and with hair dryer on full, and I then try to put him down but he often stirs and starts crying again.

Our typical routine is:

7am - feed
8:15/8:30am - nap
10am - feed
11:30am - nap
2pm - feed
3:30pm - nap
6pm - feed
6:45pm - bath
7pm - bed
10pm - df
3/4am - nf
5:30am - wakes and chats, can't get him back to sleep!

I think there may be a few problems here: we've recently moved to a mostly 4hr EASY as his feeds were too often at 3 hrs, but I feel there are too many hours of naps in his day now, which I think is why he wakes at 5:30am (he sleeps fine at bedtime, so gets a good amount at night), and this could be making him overtired by nap 1? I've tried waking him to get him to sleep through it but it didn'twork. Should I try keeping him up longer? I'm trying to follow his sleepy cues, which is usually rubbing his eyes and getting cranky.

Any help would be much.y appreciated :-)

Youre routine looks good but If you look on the FAQs

typical Amounts of Day and Night Sleep

It will give you an idea of how much day sleep your lo needs. Keeping him up later is prob not a good idea as night sleep is more restorative. EW could be cos you're lo needs an a time push as some Los tack night sleep onto am nap so you could try increasing that by 15 mins holding for 3 days and repeating if you get short naps. At this age it's normal to have two long naps and a third 45 min CN.

EW could be environmental. Anyone happening that may wak him and as is light sleep he can't resettle. Noise? Too hot/ cold? Discomfort?

Thanks Aishi,

We had a good morning and he put himself back to sleep after waking at 5:30am,so he was fresh at 7am. However I'm stillhaving the same problem getting him to nap this morning. I acted at his first cue at about 8:30, we did our nap routine and he just started bucking and screaming once he was swaddled and in the cot.

I've just tried unswaddling and that helped for a while but then he started thrashing every limb and crying.

I have no idea what to do - it's as if he hates his cot now and hates naps, but there's no reason for the sudden change.

Should I be doing shush-pat or PU/PD? He's not even down for 5 seconds before crying again so not sure PU/PD would work. However, shush pat has never worked for us.
