5 week old not breastfeeding to full
« on: November 27, 2012, 18:30:11 pm »
Hi,

my wife and I are experiencing some difficulty with our LO around BF. She feeds really well at the beginning of each feeding, but then becomes fussy and will not continue feeding until she is full. She will open her mouth and put it around the nipple, but will not suck. Instead she will shake her head back and forth and cry. She gives every indication she wants to feed but is too dysregulated to continue feeding. We attempt to wait her out to see if she will begin feeding, but to no avail. We will also pick her up and sooth her until she is calm and try feeding again. However, she will escalate back up into a frenzy. Given that she isn't fulll, she ends up wanting to feed in an hour or so again, which disrupts her entire EASY schedule. This has made it difficult for her to sleep for extended periods of time and to get on a consistent, predictable schedule.

We are looking for any advice regarding tips or tricks to facilitate more productive feeding, particularly until our LO is full. Thanks in advance.

Could she have wind?  Could she be full already?  For how long is she feeding?

Thanks for the reply. She doesn't appear to have gas. It will also happen if she is or is not burped. She typically feeds for 5 minutes before she becomes fussy but continues to suck and dive toward my breast. We've tried slowing the feeding by taking breaks and burping but this doesn't work either.

There is no sign that she is full, because she continues to suck and want the boob.

Is this while on the breast? Could be a fast letdown bothering her - DS did ok with the first one as he expected it but the second one caught him by surprise... Forceful Let-Down Problems

NBs often have a strong need to suck, but can then get frustrated at the breast if milk starts coming when they want to just suck.

If she is still hungry, have you tried switching side or some Breast compression when she starts to fuss?
