How much food?
« on: November 29, 2012, 12:01:41 pm »
My LO started solids at 6 months and loves them but I don't know if I am giving too much/too little.
I would love for some guidance!
Right now he is eating breakfast and lunch
Breakfast: 3 tablespoons of fruit purée (apples, pears, bananas) with one tablespoon of 7 grain cereal and some fruit juice mixed in to reach right consistency

Lunch: 3 tablespoons veggie purée (zucchini, squash, sweet potato) with about 50 grams of chicken, one tablespoon of 7 grain cereal, and chicken broth to reach right consistency.

Is that ok? If I would offer more he would eat it but I don't know if it is too much, or maybe I am actually not giving enough??

How much milk is he having? That needs to be your guide really - if the solids are making him cut back on milk then you need to cut back on the solids a bit. If he is taking a good amount of milk - usually between 24oz and 32oz (720ml - 960ml) and he takes that amount with the solids then it's fine!

Just remember that up until 1 soilds are for tastes and textures not to replace milk as the main source of calorie/ nutrient intake.

I don't know how much milk he is getting since I am BF... I BF 4 times a day and we still have 1 NF but I think it will be gone soon as he isn't feeding as much at night anymore. How can I know if he is getting enough milk? How do I know when I can offer more solids? When can I introduce dinner?

If you're BFing before offering solids and he's still taking feeds well, its all probably ok. With BF, often the sign that he's eating too much will be extra hunger-related NW's so if he's starting to drop that last night feed, I'd say you're doing fine :)

When you and he are ready... I did it when I moved to finger foods, just because he wasn't taking in as much at each meal. That didn't last long, he ate heaps once he got into it.

When do I start finger foods? I am kind of scared of choking!

I'm not entirely sure on the ages, but I think here it is by 9 months finger foods should be introduced but increase texture in purees (mashed, then chunky) before then. Baby led weaning is being suggested more here now too... Its important you're comfortable, because its best that LO has good associations with food rather than picking up on your stress ;)

Here's some info re: choking/gagging Information on choking and gagging
