last feed/night routine
« on: December 18, 2012, 03:53:22 am »

So we are trying to get our little one in a good wind down routine before bedtime so he goes to bed a little bit earlier than he has been.  One of the best things to do for his winding down before bed is turning the lights down low and putting his mobile on that plays classical music and rocking while drinking his bottle.  But he almost always falls asleep! Should we be doing our actual night routine (reading and humming a lullaby) before we give him his bottle? I don't want to have him fall asleep at the bottle, but the whole lights down low thing surely settles him down.  What would you all do?

I breastfeed but that was always the last thing we did in our routine in the first few months.  She definitely fell asleep several times and it never became an issue for us overnight.  As she got older we did a book after feed, and now we do feed before bath.  However, for some LOs falling asleep on the bottle or bf can become a prop so it's something to bear in mind if you start getting disturbed nights where he won't settle without the bottle.  You could always give your bottle first outside the nursery, then do lights down, rocking and cuddles before putting him down drowsy but awake :)

I was using nursing to get my four month old to sleep and since we've started the baby whisperer stuff I've changed our evening routine and its been good so far.  If its bath night we do bath first and then the rest is the same. 5 min or so in crib with music, calm down thingy, top up feed with all the lights on and if he starts to nod off i switch sides, Story with dimmer lights, then swaddle and cuddle with just the night light for 5 min and then it's off to bed. We're only 4 days into the sleep training but it only took 5 min last night and tonight to get him to sleep.

Hope this helps
