Any way of knowing how much bf baby eating?
« on: December 19, 2012, 17:46:37 pm »
Hi everyone,

Is there any way to know how much my DS gets in a feeding? He is 4.5months and is eating every 3.5-4 hours.  He is breastfed with one bottle of formula a night (120ml).  He used to take about 10-15minutes per breast but now he eats about 10min in total with a preferance for one breast.  At night he will eat for a bit longer but I cant get him to eat more during the day.  He pops off crying and is not happy until I stop trying to feed him.  Im just worried that he is not emptying my breast (if I pump after I can still get a little bit (under 15ml, but I cant pump alot even when my breasts are full) and it will lead to supply issues. He was born at 7.5lbs and now is almost 15lbs.  The doctor says he is growing well.  Should I worry about how much milk he is getting? Also, should I be concerned about the fact that he prefers one breast to the other?

Thanks :)

It all sounds completely normal and as if he's doing fine to me :)

It's normal for the amount of time at the breast to decrease over time as LOs get more efficient at getting the milk out that they need.  Also lots of mums find their LO has a preference for one breast over the other (some so much so that they only feed from that breast for each feed).

Sounds like you're both doing great :)

So lucky!! you can keep him on for ten minutes at a time!!
At 4.5 months my DS was popping off every three or four minutes just to look at everything that has always been in his nursery. Soooo irritating!!!

But like you, I was concerned that he might not be getting enough to eat. Everyone says that so long as he is gaining weight appropriately, you should not worry. Especially since he gets much more efficient at pulling milk from the breast at around 4 months. But worry I did. And I didn't stop worrying until I figured out how to measure what he was getting in him.

It requires a bit of a monetary investment, but you can measure his intake by purchasing an infant scale. I think mine was USD100. You weigh him before feeding. Then weigh him immediately after.

What I found was that sometimes he'd eat as little as 2 ounces. And other times as much as 6. And actual time at the breast didnt really factor in. For example he'd spend ten minutes popping on and off and get 3 ounces. The next time he'd spend (to me) the same ten minutes and get 5 ounces.

So I guess I'd say not to worry about his milk consumption. And if you are as obsessive as me, you can get a scale!

Regarding his boob preference, if you're worried about quality of milk or if he'll get enough if he only takes one side (always offer the second side if he pops off), don't.  The booby will make as much as he needs. it could be that that breast produces more milk or has a more comfortable letdown for him. I know I definitely have a better producing side.

I would encourage him to take the non-preferential side just to prevent production from dwindling. Especially important when he hits his next growth spurt and your preferred breast hasnt gotten supply up to demand yet. He could also start liking it better if more milk comes out! ;) also. if you dont regularly offer him the second breast, you might see a small difference in the size of your breasts if you keep him only on one side as the supply in the unused side dwindles...

Im trying the "don't worry" route for now and if not I think i will invest in a scale.  Thats a really good idea.

Thanks for your answers.

I have been BF DD for 11 months now and I'm still trying to figure out if she is getting enough milk because I don't see her actively drinking, haven't felt let down since she was 2-3 months old so I'm always second guessing myself, but she is growing and thriving so I guess it's enough. She's always been in the 90 percentile. I ALMOST got a scale and trust me I'm glad I didn't get it because I would have been spending so much time checking every time She latched off. it would have taken away from the amazing bonding experience. if the doctor says LO is fine then believe it, and a hungry baby will eventually let you know.
Keep up the good work.
