9 mo Nursing strike and teething?
« on: December 23, 2012, 01:00:35 am »
Hi everyone

My lo is almost 9 months old.  This week (on tues, it is now sat) he started to get that croupy cough and sure enough he got sick.  Took him to the paed on wed and luckily it's just a virus.  Fever was around 102 but the fever went away by Thursday.  He's VERY congested...basically a giant, crawling, drippy baby.  He's fussy and not his usual self.  On wed he wouldn't nurse after his lunchtime nursing.  I just thought it was bc he was sick and very congested.  Luckily, he drinks ebm from a cup and straw very well (no more bottles).  He went to bed that night at 630pm.  On Thursday, Friday and Saturday he would only nurse at the wake up feed.  The rest of the day he wouldn't latch on at all, screaming and crying.  I made sure he got all his bm via cup and straw and pumped the rest of those days.  Today he is fever free, but stil very congested AND I found that he's cutting in his first tooth!

Do you think this nursing strike will pass?  Is he self weaning?  I have 3 more months of bf'ing him before I go back to work after his first birthday.  I have to say that I know he's getting all his nutrients still thru the ebm but 1) I don't like pumping (hurts my nipples, even on the lowest setting) and 2) I miss nursing my baby. :-[

Any thoughts?  Thanks so much!

There is loads of great information about nursing strikes here - Is my baby weaning or is it a nursing strike?

At 9m, it would be extremely unlikely that he is self-weaning.  From what you say, there's probably some discomfort from being congested (if they can't breathe through the nose, it's hard to nurse effectively) and also from the new tooth trying to cut through.

Have you tried any pain meds/topical pain relief/teething gels etc?

As for the pumping, it may be that you haven't got the right sized flange for your pump or got your breast positioned optimally in it (if it is the right size).  Does your pump have a speed and pressure setting?

Thanks so much for your response.  Well, today started off rough.  Baby wouldn't nurse at all for the morning feed,  I was almost in tears.  I kept trying to coax him back on for 30 min or so, but he wasn't having any of it (I'd wait a few minutes then try, then with, then try...). I actually had to out of the house from abut 9am until 4 pm w the older kids so dh took care of baby.  I pumped at grandmas during the middle of the day.  Maybe being away from him so long helped bc when I got back, he came back to the breast!  It was a good feed.  Yay!  aND he even nursed at bedtime (the first time in 5nights!).  So my baby is slowly coming back to me.  Dh has been using saline to help w the congestion, but he's still pretty miserable.  He's having a hard time eating even.  Chunky foods that he could usually eat are now chocking him.  He's had a rough day.

But it seems like the nursing strike may be ending.  We will see how tomorrow goes.  I have to say tho that nursing him twice today just warmed my heart.  I missed him so much!

Re pumping...I don't think the flange is the wrong size.  I am small breasted and can't imagine there being a smaller flange!  Haha!  I think they needed to toughen up a bit.  I have been using the lowest pressure setting and the lowest speed.  I just don't enjoy pumping...

How does hand expressing go for you? Worked better than pumping for me.

Not enjoying pumping probably doesn't help.  It might help to start of with a faster speed to start with and then slow it down when you let down, mimicking what happens when LO nurses.  Or try hand expressing, as bec suggested
