3 week old not napping
« on: December 28, 2012, 22:02:54 pm »
For the past 6 days my lo has not been taking naps during the day.  She is 3.5 weeks old now, sleeps anywhere between 5-7 hours during the night.  During the day, she falls asleep while bf, and when I put her down, she'll wake up and start rooting.  Our bf sessions last about 30 minutes.  She gets sleepy at 5pm and then I have to wake her for cluster feeds, etc. Is it really hunger that's keeping her from napping? She has about 8 wet diapers, 6-7 bowel movements per 24 hours. For a day I was concerned was not eating enough. So I bottle fed her 80 ml, still did not nap.  Just laid quietly for about 30 minutes. Is this a faze? Any suggestions?

At this age they can sleep fitfully. I wouldn't worry about sticking to a strict routine but you can follow a rough easy. I would def feed as needed she could be going brought a gs. There's a lot of info in our FAQ pages but here are some links to get u started...

Is my baby ready to increase his ‘A’ time? (incl. 'A' times for younger babies)

What are A times and how do they fit into the EASY routine?

Typical Amounts of Day and Night Sleep

Could she be in discomfort if she's not nappin at all? What's your current easy in EAS format please?

The first 2 weeks from the hospital our easy schedule was:

8:30am wake, diaper change
8:45am feed 30 minutes, 10 minute A time
9:30am nap for 2 hours
repeat

She would take 4 naps a day, 1 catnap before 9pm bedtime. Dream feed at 11pm.

Now she does not take a morning nap at all, and will nap at 5pm. Dozing during feeding time.

Today it occurred to me that she might just be more aware of her surroundings, perhaps overstimulated? She yawns, will doze for a minute, and then suddenly wake up and become very alert. It seems she's waking herself up, sort of startling herself before she can get into deep sleep. This afternoon 3pm (no morning nap again)  I tried rocking her in her room for 30 minutes till she fell into deeper sleep, white noise on, shades drawn - she slept for 1 hour. When she woke up, we put a pacifier in her mouth and she fell back to sleep until the pacifier fell out.

Could it just be a faze, as she's becoming more aware?
