Rejecting one side
« on: January 02, 2013, 17:40:27 pm »
My baby is 9 weeks old and recently she started to reject nursing on my right side. She is laying on her left side when nursing and when i switch to nurse her on her right side she nurses better, but still on both sides she is fussy, but really wont nurse on my right side.
I recently have been using some brown rice protein powder, could that be bothering her?
Please help! going crazy here.

I have had this problem.  Many babies have a side preference.  There were times when my DD wouldn't nurse on my right side for days and I'd get so engorged that I'd have to pump!  As a result my right side doesn't produce as much.  I always found she would nurse on the 'bad' side better when sleepy, so I actually looked forward to night feeds for that reason!  All three of my LOs had a preference, some stronger than others.  I always found it got better after about 4 months.  Now she has no problem nursing on either side, and it was the same for all my kids.

Can you put her on the left first and then the right?  I always found if my LOs were hungry and upset there was no way they'd nurse on the right, but would often do the left and then once they were calm I could put them on the right.

Hugs, nursing srikes are very common and usually do pass.

What about nursing in the football/rugby ball hold for the breast she's not liking so much?  It could be she's uncomfortable on that left side for some reason (could be post-birth issues, earache, etc).  If she won't take it to start with, you could try feeding to start with from the other breast in cradle hold and then slide her across to the other one (sometimes they don't notice)
