should she have one nap now?
« on: January 04, 2013, 01:20:39 am »
Hi! I have a question:
when should babies go from 2-1 nap?

my 15 MO has recently refused to take her morning nap, she goes on until 1 or 2pm, and takes a 45-90 minute nap, and then she doesn´t want to take her afternoon nap, since she's not tired yet, and if it's past 5pm I won't let her have an other one because she won't go to sleep at her regular time at night. Should I go whith the flow and let her have only one nap now? she doesn't seem OT during the day, but some times I can't get her to sleep on her own at night.
I have to point out that she's had a rough time during this month: we went on a trip and she stayed at her aunt's house for a few days, then she got a cold, then for the holidays she's been having some rough nights, sleeping late and getting off schedrule... but now everything is back to normal.

This was her "normal" schedrule until a week ago:

8am WU
11 am nap 90minutes
3 pm nap 90 minutes
8pm bed time

Thankyou!!!

I would for sure try one nap!  When my kids did the switch (rather young at 10/11 months) we went cold turkey to one nap at about 11:30/12:00, but we were waking up at 7/7:30.

Hi Hun,

I would say yes also TBH, but I wonder if you may be able to strike a balance on her morning A time. Is she still waking at 8 am at the moment  ??? If so I wonder if you may be trying for the nap a little late. Maybe start WD at 4.45 A time and if time make sure it's a good length. I would be surprised if she is able to suddenly drop a whole 90 minutes from her schedule without becoming OT, so I would consistently try for the nap at 5 hours maximum right now. Even if she is in her cot resting before hand it will help keep OT at bay. Also as you say she isn't going over as well at night, that would suggest to me that OT may be looming, so keep an eye on her close to BT and do EBT if necessary, just in the interim while she adjusts.

What do you think  ???

x.

Yes, she wakes up at 8am, some times a little earlier, or some times even at 9!! but mostly is 8am... she started by skipping one nap some times, but she's been doing it every day now.

I will try the max 5hour A time, and will tell you how it goes :)

Thanks a lot!

Hummm... she's been really cranky this past days... I thought it could be a tooth coming out, but maybe is OT... she yawns and rubs her eyes, cries and gets mad for no apparent reason, today I put her to nap at 10.30am, at 11.00 se was asleep (she had woken up at 8am) maybe she still needs her 2 naps?? what's the average sleep time needed for a baby 15 months?

PS sorry if my english isn't perfect, I speak spanish X)

lol, but your english is better than some english speaking people I know...can't imagine if I had to communicate in another language!!

What is her day looking like with one nap? Could she be getting ill?  I'm not sure what the norm is for kids that age, mine were doing about a 12 hour night with a 2.5-3 hour nap at that age.

thankyou  MasynandSpencer, I try hard to make my self understood :)

Her nap is usually 1.5hours, maybe if her only nap was 2 or 3 hours, she wouldn't be OT, but how do I lenghten her nap time?

her day with one nap looks lik this:
8.00-8.30am WU
1.00 or 2.00pm nap 1.5 hour nap (on a really good day she may get a 2.00 hour nap)
7.30-8.00 bedtime (usually is 8.00pm, but some days she is miserable at that time, so she goes earlier)

As I said before, she got her nap at 11am today, so she will have to take an other one in the afternoon, otherwise we risk of having a melt down :(

My DS just turned 16 mo and he averages 13.5 hr of sleep in a 24 hr period (we are on one nap most days) - this increased when we moved to one nap (his nights lengthened).  However I believe he is low sleep needs so not sure if this is "average" or not for kiddos his age.

I think your one nap days look pretty good - you could always do an earlier BT if her naps are less than 2 hrs.  My DS doesn't consistently take 2+ hr naps so I'm no expert, but maybe if you stuck w/ the same schedule and she got used to napping once a day, her naps would naturally start to lengthen.  Remember you can also throw in some two nap days (like today) to keep OT at bay.

HTH!

hmmm...yeah, my kids just naturally lengthened the nap when we went to one nap...how many days has she been on one nap?  I wonder if a super early bedtime would help her, get that extra sleep in and help her have a longer morning A time and therefore a later and longer nap? Just thinking out loud!

Hi Hun,

Sorry for my absence, I have flu at the moment, and my head won't allow me to look at the computer screen right now. So glad you have the Ladies, for extra support. I will be back but in the meantime here is a link you may find helpful:

Typical Amounts of Day and Night Sleep
