How soon would I know if LO had a dairy allergy or intolerance?
« on: January 07, 2013, 18:00:25 pm »
I've been off dairy for five months, but realized some cereal I gave her a while back was the ADD water variety, so it was made up of dry skim milk.  Would she react right away or how long would it take to react?  On a other thread I posted that I've stuck with homemade oatmeal mixed with bm or water, bc I fear the store variety contains milk ingredients and may hurt her tummy..

Thanks!

HI, It would really depend on whether it was an allergy or intolerance how how severe it was to know how long it long to take react. Minutes or hours - even days.

You say you gave it to her a while back? Did you notice a reaction?

Does your LO have an allergy/intolerance or are you on the elimination diet just in case?

FYI - the add milk variety also contain trace milk ingredients.  There are a few brands that are dairy free though...

I did notice extra fussiness, nothing in her poop different though.

I'm trying to find cereal that doesn't contain milk ingredients, I'm shocked how they are rare to come by, I thought many babies had dairy intolerances or allergies.

For now im using homemade rolled oats that I cooked and puréed.  Due to her reflux I am only able to feed her tbsp twice day of foods, mostly veggies.  Is this about right for 6 month old?  She even pukes up her food as well as her milk.

She's now on Prevacid plus ranitidine, hope prevacid works.  Her weight gain is ok, but not that great, prob bc she pukes so much.

I'm just eliminating dairy for now, I don't know if she has an intolerance or allergy I cannot tell. Her stools were collected and tested however they were only testing for bacteria parasite and c diff, all came back negative.

If she is just being sick, I would cut it out for now personally and try again in a couple of weeks... there is no expected amount of solids at this age... it's all just for fun.  Ideally, you want her milk intake to remain the same as it was before solids as they are meant to be "extra" not "instead of."

What country are you in?  Might be able to find you some cereal :)

Thanks Kara!

Ill keep things very slow for now.  I'm not forcing food on her anymore unless she seems ready. Milk is her priority so I'm making sure this amount isn't decreased.

I live in Ontario, Canada.  ;D

Well then, that's easy!  I am in Canada too :)

Depending on whether you are in a big city or a little one, you might find these in a store close by (Baby Gourmet is at Superstore/Loblaws) and I *think Healthy Times is too...

If not, well.ca has free shipping :)
