ideas for sandwich fillers for 1 year olds?
« on: January 13, 2013, 19:51:10 pm »
Hi, my LO is 1 and only has the 4 teeth at the mo but in doing really well with finger foods. Feel like I'm running out of ideas for sandwich fillers though and all feels a little samey! Anyone go any good ideas/recipes for fillings? No allergies have emerged as yet so nothing is off limits. Thanks!

DD's faves are:
Tuna mayo
Houmous and grated cheese (we have warmed pittas and also have grated  cheese in ours- yummy!)
Cream cheese and ham (although she usually takes out the ham and eats it separately!)
Cheese savoury

She's not bothered for egg but you could try egg mayo too!

Tagging along. Silly question perhaps but do you cut the sandwich into tiny pieces? Dd only has 6 teeth and would love a "big" sandwich like everyone else but I'm afraid she will take a big piece and choke.

Thanks:)

Houmous is a favourite here too, on its own or with chicken
Avocado and mozzarella and tomato (even nicer toasted with pesto)
Marmite and butter
Cream cheese
Grated Cheddar and branston pickle (the sandwich one is less chunky)
Peanut butter (with jam if you want a treat)
Pate and grapes (slice and put in if you can be bothered or on the side)
Tuna mayo and sweetcorn
Egg mayo
Roasted peppers with cream cheese
Sausages or bacon (naughty!)

We mostly serve sandwiches with cherry times and cucumber slices/sticks so I don't put too many veggies in the sandwich.

We used to cut the bread in 6 fingers but now just do 4 squares (quarters).

HTH

BTW, what does Cheese savoury mean Nicola?

I always made dd sandwhiches at that age....cut into tiny suares...like a bit smaller than a postage stamp. She adored grilled cheese, and her all time fave is cream cheese and jelly.  In the US, we aren't supposed to offer peanut butter til 2 years old.

Audrey has 8 teeth and manages sandwiches just fine! We have a lot of the same fillings already mentioned. She loves a tuna melt for lunch!

Cheese savoury is: grated cheese, grated carrot, a little grated red onion/spring onion mixed with mayonnaise. I also like to add a teeny bit of salad cream for a bit of sharpness!

Bacon and sausage sandwiches are popular here but never eaten as a sandwich- always deconstructed!!

I buy vegetable bolognese sauce, put it on toast, slice cheese on top, microwave, and it becomes pizza!

DD's fav when little was mashed avocado/strawberry yogurt (lots of good fats!)  I just mashed the avocado and stirred in some yogurt... offered the remaining "spread" to her in a dish with a spoon as well.

Haven't tried fish with DD yet (I am a vegetarian and fish is the only thing that makes my stomach turn!)

I haven't offered peanut butter either, but I do use a soy based "peanut" butter for DD that tastes very similar and has almost the exact same nutrition profile - it's called WowButter.  She loves that too!

Like Anne, I cut DDs sammies into small bite sized pieces as well - still do most of the time as she tends to destroy them otherwise!  Little bites are easy to pick up and eat without having to fuss with it much :)
