Toddler bed
« on: January 14, 2013, 10:13:16 am »
I have seen a really cute little toddler bed that's pretty cheap and thought it would be nice to get it for hamish.. What age should i try this? I thought it might be nice but should i wait till 2? Can i use  blanket and pillow before 2? (not sure if this was toddler sleep or hoggwatch....)

Although this transition worked well for us (amazingly well....I was dreading it!!), I would strongly recommend not transfering until he's actually able to get out of the cot, or is too big for it, or whatever.

We transitioned just before 2yrs (I think) but only because he was climbing out of the cot.

Definitely buy the bed in preparation though! :)

See... i kind of get the idea that he will NEVER climb out of the cot!! That would be DANGEROUS!! He's not very adventurous... But i might get the bed (it's on sale) and pop him in it when he's 2 if i don't need to before...

We started using duvet and pillow in a cotbed (still with cot sides up) from around 21 months.
No issues with that and L likes them a lot.

When we eventually (and hopefully not for a long time yet :P ) take the sides off, L won't have a change of bedding to adjust to as well. That is out thinking anyway.

Get it if you can store it but there is also no need to move him into it when he is 2. We moved my DS out of his cot at 3.5yo, actually I think it was more like 3y9m.  We had no issues with the transition at all, he was ready for it and excited about it :)

I started using a duvet/pillow in boys cotbeds before they went into a bed to get them out the grobags and used tot it.  Ethan was in cotbed till over 3.5 though and Lewis has just gone in a BBB and he's nearly 3.  However Amy at 18 months was fine.

we use a duvet and pillow now in the cot as our house is COLD.
My advice would be to leave him in the cot as long as possible. DS was 2.5 but hoping M will be more like 3.

Thanks for the advice ladies... I actually wish now we had one of those cots you can take the side off in so that we could try it without taking down the whole cot- then if we didn't like it it would be easy to put it back up. The size of the room means that there's only room for one bed option, so we might just keep with the cot...

We moved Eddie to a BBB at 17.5 months over Xmas. He transitioned like a champ. Fell out a few times onto the padding around the bednwr had laid down then we gave him a pillow. He has always had a comforter/duvet since birth so that was no big change except now its tucked in so he doesn't get tangled up anymore.

You might remember Father Christmas brought C a toddler bed for Christmas. She was just over 2 and hadn't climbed out of her cot and I'm not sure she would either so understand what you mean about H. Our reason for doing so was that we would use her cotbed (with a new mattress) for baby and I wanted to make the transition a good period away from baby's arrival. Christmas seemed like a good opportunity to do this as it was F C saying she was a big girl if that makes sense. C has had a pillow since about 18mos but we gave her the duvet once in her BGB. We have found that she was still cold:the recommended duvets are still really thin and C loves to be cosy so we have put her in her thin sleeping bag with her duvet on top. She has slept in her bed brilliantly and not once got out of it

I was really nervous of this transition but C has been great. Good luck with whatever you decide :)

He's also in a sleeping bag- so wouldn't be able to get his legs up... again- i know that there are some houdini bubs out there that could climb out no matter what - but hamish.. not one of those!! Not pregnant of course- but it's a great idea to get them out of the bed early... before the next bub...

MM- I remember Eddie being a bit of a champ!

I think i'll buy the bed and the REALLY CUTE bed spread and such and then wait till either his birthday (may) or till it starts getting cold (possibly late april) ...

Mmmm, i wouldn't be in a hurry to move him either! If you need the cot for another use or he climbs out yes, but if he's happy with the cot why to change it at 2?  I heard so many stories of kids starting to wake up in the night and coming out of bed, thinking it is time for playing, that I am also dreading the transition... Our it is quite close, as DS is already more than 3, big enough and still in a cot...

I'm a huge proponent of waiting as long as possible as I know so many people who tried to do it early and it was a disaster (not to say that some LOs don't need it earlier than others).  We put Katie in a toddler bed around her 3rd birthday and Allie not too long after she turned 2 (she was bigger and waking because she kept banging into the sides of her crib, slept so much better after).  We had zero transition issues with either of them, no climbing out of bed all night, no wandering around, no sleep trouble, nothing.

We haven't moved Z yet but have the bed, sheets, duvet and quilt my mum made him all ready for when he does. My auntie who is a plunket nurse convinced me to wait as long as possible :P that said Z isn't good with change so it makes sense for us to wait and we have brought a second cot for T.

Good luck with whatever you choose - and totally buy the bed now anyway ;) x

Sara, I'm interested to know what reasons your auntie who is a nurse advised to wait as long as possible? For a medical reason? Developmental?? I'm a fretter so this now has me questioning myself!

I guess the only negative for us has been C dropping her nap early but she was doing that anyway, cot or no cot! Her night sleep is brilliant and we've not experienced any of the negatives cited. Guess we've been lucky!
