is it common for you lo to have a favorite breast?
« on: January 28, 2013, 21:17:10 pm »
my lg seems to prefer one breast to the other - especially at night when shes tired. Ive tried starting her on her least favourite breast but does not always make any difference. She pulls away and crys.  I have noticed i have less milk from the least fav when expressing? any advice?

This is the exact same situation I am in. I also get less engorged from the least favourite breast. Sometimes he feeds from it ok and other times he screams until I switch sides.

I think my left breast (his least favourite) has a slower letdown so I do compressions to try and speed up the milk flow. If he feeds from my right then I always offer the left after, sometimes he takes it, I think it's because he is calmer and not as hungry so doesn't mind working for it.

It is totally normal for LO's to have a preference though.

I notice your close by too :) always good to have another Scottish BW :)

As Kelly says it is completely normal. Some mamas can trick their LO by using the rugby hold as LO is lying on the side they would normally lay on for the favourite breast if that makes sense?

Yeah I had to do rugby hold with C for the first month to feed from my right side ( now that's his favourite side lol)

It's trial and error to see what works - good thing is, she's feeding ok from that side during the day :)

I'm in Stirling :) xx

totally happened with me both times - with Oscar a lot later though, more like 6 mths +, with Emma from almost the beginning. Fed them both only from one side (preferred) for the last 2-3 mths of feeding....

I found out the possible reason for mine - had ultrasounds for lumps in breasts over the years and turns out my milk ducts on right (less pref) side are twisted and there aren't so many....so its a slower letdown regardless of stimulation. My two impatient spiriteds couldn't be bothered waiting, I presume!

Hugs and HTH x
