Thanks, this helps a lot.

It's hard to let go of the ut/ot worry but I know for me I have felt amazing not worrying about all that
This is what I'm having a hard time with...I've been such a clock watcher on A times that I find it hard not to be concerned with that.

Now, he usually naps 1.5hrs in the morning (consistently), not 2hrs , so if I did a 9:30am - 11am do you think that a 2:30pm nap is too late?  Should I move it up?  Or should I try for 10 - 11:30am, then a 2:30pm nap?

What time does your LO wake up at in the morning?

Usually sometime between 6:30 - 7am, though a few times this week its been 7:30am because he's been up half the night so he was sleeping a little later.

I tried for 9:30am this morning (WU was 6:30am today), and it ended up being more like 9:45am which I think is a better time for him anyway.  So he did 9:45am - 11:05am, so I'll try for the 2:30pm nap.

He takes swimming lessons on Thursday's at 9:30 - 10am.  Do you think we should skip it this week?  I want to be really consistent, but I'm not sure if it is necessary because he always sleeps really REALLY well after swimming :)

I would stick with 945. I think the first few days we did set naps we got under 1.5 hrs then I was waking her at 2 hr mark.
You sound a lot like me. I would skip it this week. We have a class on Fridays and I also skipped it the first week we were getting sorted. Once you have it down pat I don't think a later nap once a week is a big deal.

Well I would consider today a sort of success LOL.

He had a 1hr 20min nap in the AM, which is typical for him...no issues there.  I managed to get him to sleep by 2:30pm, though it took a lot of support from me (patting his back etc.), and he stayed asleep (YAY!) until my stupid dog starting barking for absolutely no reason and woke him up at 3:40pm.  I made a sad attempt to get him back to sleep, but we wasn't responding easily and I figured there wasn't much of a point, so just got him up.  I think had the dog not barked that he would have stayed asleep until 4pm or so.  I am just going to aim for a 7pm BT tonight.

He seems to either have every teething symptom under the sun, or...he is slightly under the weather which is obviously not helping naps or our nights.  He's congested today and his cheeks are bright pink - I gave him some ibprophen before his PM nap and put some vicks in his humidifier.  The IB seems to have helped a bit.

In any case, I'll try to keep the same routine tomorrow - 9:45 AM nap, 2:30 PM nap.

Good work! Darn dog. My dog has great timing too ;)

I kept a little log for the first week so I could see how things were going.

I want to be really consistent this first week while trying to set his clock, but I'm concerned about the A times (and I KNOW I need to forget about them!).

DS ended up sleeping with us last night because his nights have been so awful, his WU time was 7am this morning.  I tried to keep his AM nap consistent at 9:45am, but he's been protesting up there for 10mins now.  We never have AM nap problems so I'm concerned that he's UT, since this morning a 9:45am nap is almost 40mins under our usual A time.  I'm not quite sure how to do this...?  How to set his clock when his morning WUs vary and this usually greatly differs what time I would put him down at.

Yesterday a 9:45am nap worked fine, but his WU was 6:30am.

So today ended up like this...

AM Nap: 10am - 11:40am (woke him up)
PM Nap: 2:40pm - 4pm

So, I think it was okay.  How much time variance is okay?  I mean, I was trying for 9:45am and 2:30pm, and I got close...is +/- 10 or 15mins okay or is that too much to throw his 'clock' off.  The AM nap is probably going to have to float a bit...9:45am was definitely not working for him this morning.

How much daytime sleep should we be aiming for at this age?  I certainly don't want to go over!  Having the PM nap earlier is helping a lot I think :)  When I was going by A times, sometimes his PM nap wouldn't be until 3:30pm, which is probably half the reason he was refusing it.

I'm no expert on set naps at all, never done them - but I think +/- 10 or 15 mins should be fine.

Here's a link on average day and total sleep needs: Typical Amounts of Day and Night Sleep. There can be quite a bit of variance there, but 3 hours at this age should be plenty.

We are on day 4 and I've been trying 9:45am but it always ends up being 10am so it is more like 10am & 2:45pm which I think is okay.  The last 2 days both naps have been 1.5hrs.  We've been having a fairly early BT (asleep by 7pm) because DS is sick so his nights have been crummy, and even with the naps he's still exhausted by the end of the day.  Hopefully it passes soon :)

So, our naps appear to be getting shorter.  Today was 1.15 in the AM and 1.20 in the PM.  Not sure what to do about that with set naps?  Or are these lengths okay?  Neither seemed to reach that 1.5 hr "restorative" state so that's why I'm worried.  And now that I think about it, I said yesterday's naps were 1.5hr, but I think they might have been slightly under.

It is also taking a lot to settle him (though, we are both sick right now so that could be the issue with that).  I just want to make sure the whole set naps thing is the best strategy.  Maybe I should keep the set naps for a few more days and just observe and then go from there?  I just want to figure out the best strategy :)

Hi Lindsay, if you are doing set naps, I wouldn't worry about them being shorter than 1hr30 for a couple of days - we only had to change nap times when they dropped down to catnaps (40mins).  Sorry he is sick - we are fortunate(?) that sickness usually means more sleep for our LO, but I know for some they get less sleep.

I think you need to stick with the set naps for at least another few days to really see if they're working. And agree that I wouldn't worry if naps are a little under 1hr30, especially at the start :) If they drop down to consistently 1hr or less, I think you'll need to look at tweaking something.

Okay, just wanted to make sure :)  He had he best night last night in probably 2 week with only 1 NW at 1:30am and I was able to settle him within a few mins.  I have his humidifier on full blast LOL :P
