12 weeks fussy feeder
« on: February 03, 2013, 22:00:19 pm »
Hi, this is my first post!

To give u a bit of history my dd has milk protein allergy, silent reflux and posterior tongue tie, she is on ranitadine and has now 1 nutramigen aa top up due to no/slow weight gain (was has 5 top ups a day) when I stopped top ups her weight gain stopped.

So throughout all the above my dd was always keen to bf although she has always preferred one side .....so now she is really fussy during the day (feeds well at night in side lying position) on both sides popping on and off crying and will only feed for a few minutes but is still hungry, if I feed her on the bed she is slightly better but not great..  any ideas!

Hugs,
Are you dairy free? - soy as well?
If your not soy free your LO could also be intolerant to that. I know with my DS I was dairy free and he improved en deteriorated around 10 weeks. On neocate (amino acid based) he was a ton better.

Fussing on the bottle or breast can be to do with reflux discomfort too. Does she fuss on both or just the breast? What is her weight and ranitidine dosage? Reflux tends to peak between 3-5 mths. A lot of LOs need the max ranitidine dose, or to switch to a PPI around is age.

How are poops?

Hi, yeah dairy free not soy yet, she improved so much when we went dairy free that we thought we would wait and see wat happened. She was 10lbs 9oz (8lb 12oz at birth) a fortnight ago getting weighed this afternoon and is on 0.3mls ranitidine(only been on ranitadine a week).

Poos large amount every other day orange curry sauce generally lol..

Any mucus in the poops? Any eczema? It could be she is also reacting to soy. Have you removed all hidden dairy too?

Is she on ranitidine 2 or 3 times a day? - have you seen improvement this last week?

Oh sorry and is the feeding fussiness on breast and bottle or just breast?
Hugs

All hidden dairy is removed
Shes on ranitidine 0.3mls 3 times a day.  this fussiness when feeding has got worse the last few days, her other symptoms of reflux haven't changed much that I can see.
She used to have eczema and mucus in poo but that stopped when we went dairy free.
She is fussy with both but more with breast than bottle.

Is she windy/gassy?
I do think it sounds like a reflux discomfort symptom :-\
Erin do you have any thoughts ???

She does have a little wind but its not causing her trouble.

My big problem is cos she's not feeding well during the day (cos of the fussiness) she will want to feed even more at night ( she has always fed alot at night, I let her because of weight issues but don't think I can cope on any less sleep) and or that she has not put enough weight on.

When you say she has a PTT, I presume you haven't had that divided yet?  Are you planning to?  Tongue ties can cause a good deal of fussiness in feeding and give reflux-like symptoms due to the amounts of air that LO is taking in along with the milk.

Its very hard to get ptt  clipped here (n ireland) they either don't recognise it or say it doesn't affect feeding ...my dd saw a dr who said cos she can stick her tongue out she doesn't have tt although a le leache  league leader and lc says she does have one. The lc is trying to get me a referral ...

Ah, that's not so good for you.  I really hope the LC gets a referral sorted for you.  TTs can cause enormous problems with feeding and, usually, if there has been an issue with low weight gain doctors are more likely to do something about it.  A TT can also impact on feeding with a bottle, so that's not always an answer to the problem either.

My DD could stick her tongue out as well, but had a PTT and was causing significant trauma to me, so we had hers divided at 9w.

The Dr/Hv have put DDs slow weight gain down to milk allergy and low milk supply, LC say it more milk transfer problem..

Well, problems with milk transfer will lead to low supply, so in that, they're both right.  Doctor just has the cause/effect round the wrong way :-\

Hmm...if it's both breast and bottle fussiness, I wonder about the TT as well since it can have an effect on feeding with either.
12 weeks is growth spurt territory as well, that could be part of the fussiness as well.
