8.5 month should I be capping naps, day seems to long
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:04:05 am »
Hi, after some ideas please currently DS is having roughly a 13 hour day but I'm struggling with trying to fit long naps into day and get a decent BT
Roughly our day is
WU 6.15
Ff 6.45 solids 8
Nap 9.40 usually 1.5 to 2 hours
Solids 12
Ff 2pm
Nap 2.45 (if slept 1.5) lasts 1.5
Solids 4.45
Bath 6
Ff 6.30
BT 7

DS is getting very hyper by BT which I thought was OT but this is shortest A time so is it UT but then if make BT later his day is getting very long!?
Get the odd NW but varies can be hour after bed, 11pm, 1pm but these are usually just a cry out and take a few mins to re settle only!
DS self settles and is teething!

Thanks

Zoe

I think it all looks fine, tbh.  It's quite normal to have a 13hr day at this point on two naps, because the A times are longer and you don't really want to start capping naps yet.  11hr sleep overnight is a solid, restful night.  Once you get to the point of the A times getting longer and you start capping one of the naps, your day will come back down to 12.5, then 12hr likely when you switch to one nap.

As for BT, I think you could push it out by 15min to see if that reduces the hyper-ness.  My guess on the odd NW is discomfort from teething.

It really looks like you're doing great! :)

Thanks so much for having a look its do helpful to get an opinion on it all :-)
Is it normal for last A of the day to be short at this age? DS is so active, crawls like a rocket and pulling up and furniture cruising he must be shattered by end of the day lol!

Yes, esp as they get more active and if the other A times are a good length.  It's always good to look at the day as a whole and there are lots of LOs who like the last A to be shortest.

It's not you, hon. Have you tried meds for teething discomfort? It sounds like it could be a bit developmental as well with the all the activity he is doing now. Is it possible he's OS and needs a bit more calming A or wind down before going to sleep? (((Hugs))), these blips can be frustrating.

Thanks hun Well we've been to docs as he was pulling on his ear and he has little ear infection so we have meds for that and teething meds too...poor pumpkin!
I think it might be OS with him as he's getting so excited by everything right now but we did have a bottle and some stories in bedroom a good 20-30 mins before nap but he did find a picture on the wall extremely exciting!!
No one tells you being a mum is this hard and I always blame myself when his sleep goes wrong!

Hardest job in the world, but best too! :) It sounds like you found the culprit... as if teething isn't enough, those ear infections are painful. :(  Hope he feels better quick!

Nightmare again today really don't know where I'm going wrong...LO slept fine through night and am nap 1.5 hours on 3.30 A time but pm nap again fought like mad and by time he's asleep it's been 4 hours A time! We had 30 mins wind down with bottle and stories!
He must be OT by 4 hours A time but at 3.30 he seemed fine and happy no sleepy signs!

Sorry I haven't replied, I was away for the weekend.  I'd go ahead and add 15min onto the pm A; he's got high A times already, but if they were working and now he's fighting, then that's the most reasonable thing to do, I'd say.  You might have to cap the pm nap a bit after a few days to stay within the 13hr day.  (((Hugs))), it's so hard when they fight naps.

Hi that's no problem, hope you had a nice weekend away?!
Today's been a bit better did 3.25 A from WU but had to wake him 1.20 into nap for swimming, hated waking him but he loves swimming and I guess life has to keep going so decided to try 3.30A for pm nap which included 40 mins wind down with bottle and stories but he fell asleep at 3.40 A and woke himself at 1.15hr. BT was 3 hr A later and no real protesting!!

Think a lot is developmental as he just loves pulling up and furniture cruising and walking round his cot!! Spent time today with him playing in thr cot so he can get the pulling up out of his system.
Can't be content with crawling lol...I don't think he will be happy until he can run ;-)

Sounds like you're on top of it, and yes, I agree, there is a lot of developmental stuff going on at this age!

Thanks for your help, it's all a bit weird here keep getting long am nap but short pm nap even with 3.40A time no NW but now EW 5.30 does chat to himself for a bit and then drops back off for 30 mins or so! Trying to keep day to 12.5-13 hours can you think if there's anything I need to try changing!?
Always changing this one!!

Hmm, so what does the EASY look like?  That type of EW usually indicates UT, but can be developmental as well.  He sure is keeping you on your toes!
