Early waking from naps
« on: February 06, 2013, 18:37:44 pm »
Hi all-
I've been reading lots on the forum about naps and have tried the tips about early waking from naps.  My LO is 12 weeks old and has been waking early from naps (anywhere from about 45-60 minutes in) for the last few weeks.  I did the W2S strategies for about 5 days straight (either my husband or I even stayed in the room for all of her naps for a couple of days...wow, mind numbing!).  The W2S strategies worked but when I don't do them, she wakes again.  I've been trying to not be in there and just get back her to sleep when I hear her cry and that usually works..but I've been using a pacifier.  Any thoughts on what I should be doing differently so that she doesn't continue this pattern of waking 45-60 minutes in?  Maybe I need to go back to doing the W2S stuff again for a few days.  I know this is a sign of being OT or off-schedule but I'm trying like heck for this not to be the case.  All that being said, I started back to work this week (part-time) so I have to teach our nanny about what to do so we can hopefully figure this out.  Also, our LO sleeps 11-12 hours straight at night (with a DF) generally, despite bad naps (I know, I know, we are lucky!!!).

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi there,
This is a really common problem and a lot of it is developmental. Could you post your routine for the last 2 days so we can take a look.
Is she going to sleep independently?

Ok, thanks.  I will post tonight as the nanny was with her yesterday (and of course her naps were amazing!) and I'd like to see how today goes since I'm with her.  Also, yes, she can put herself to sleep, most of the time.  I should also note that she is going through a growth spurt this week...wow!

In general I would say she is doing really well - your nights are awesome!
The days when you have had a bad nap it can then throw the whole day off as you are second guessing the right A time - this is really common.
What I would say is the first day when she started off with a shorter nap she may have been a bit UT so might be worth pushing to more like 1.20 which is the norm for her age. I notice on the second day you did 1.15 and got a better nap so maybe that is her 'sweet spot'
How has today been?

So you think starting to put her down at 1.20?  Or do I want her asleep after 1.20?  She just woke after one hour again and she went down at 1.10...but was so squirmy and crabby so I thought she was ready.  I guess I'm always nervous to push the awake time and then she may get OT making it tough to fall alseep (we've had that issue in the past too:)).  Thanks for your help!  I really appreciate someone else taking a look at this since I'm so consumed..and you're right we are doing well.  I need to keep reminding myself of that and we've worked hard to get here!

Asleep for 1.20. If she gets squirmy I would take her for a little walk around the house  - I used to do that to extend A time.
