Poor milk production or what????
« on: February 07, 2013, 00:02:34 am »
Hi I have a 7week ds and he was in hospital for a week at 3 weeks and was difficult to settle when he came home, my gp thought it might be silent reflux , dd was very hard to settle to sleep so a couple days ago after I fed him I gave him a top of of formula one oz and he settled and slept. The thing is I have given him top ups in the last few days after I fed him to make sure he has enough and 50per cent he will take any thing from an oz to three ozs  and settle?? I have a 21 month ds and 3 1/2 dd. as well and to be honest I'm quiet upset that he doesn't settle on my breast milk..I do need to remember to eat  and drink more I do when I remember!!!! Where am I going wrong please help. Xx

Hugs.  It's hard when they don't settle and they are so little.  When feeding are feeding from both sides?  Are you doing compressions when his sucking slows down?   The breast compressions will help him get more of the hind milk.

If you want to exclusively bf him, then I would recommend putting him back on the breast even if it means putting him back on a breast he has already suckled from.

Just wanted to back up the great advice you've already been given :)

Could it be that milk isn't being transferred from you to LO as well as it could be?  Could positioning/attachment be improved a little? Could there be a tongue tie/lip tie?

Might be worth hunting down a local BF support group and asking a peer supporter/BF counsellor to have a little look at a feed.  They might come up with ways you can optimise latch etc
