adding whole milk & BFing
« on: February 25, 2013, 18:53:28 pm »
DD just turned a year this past week. dumb question. i'm not really dropping feeds yet, although the one before bed will prob be the first to go.

when should i give her milk? or does it matter if i'm nursing?  i gave her some for the first time this morning (with breakfast) and she drank it up.

I give DD a cup of milk when she gets up in the morning, and a cup before we head up to do bath, brush teeth, BT routine in the evening.  I've done this since I stopped bf just after her first birthday.  Sometimes she isn't that bothered and hardly touches it, but other times she will drink a few oz.  She also gets milk on cereal and eats a fair amount of cheese and yoghurt (mainly concerned about calcium intake at this age).  If you're still nursing several times a day though you probably don't need to offer additional milk much, if at all :)

I agree if you are BFing still at least a couple times a day then she doesn't need to drink milk. It may be an idea to get her used to the taste though so that she will switch easily when you do give up BFing.

I am still BFing DS2 3-4 times a day but he has milk on cereal and probably a couple oz in a cup each day mainly because he asks for it when DS1 has a drink of milk on demand. Those are normally with snacks.  If I skip a BF because I'm not around then I normally get DH to offer him a sippy of milk just as an alternative when he would normally BF. That is normally at BT. He eats yogurt and cheese so I don't worry about milk too much.

ok ali that is really what i was planning.  for someone to give her milk when i'm not around.

i did give her 2 small cups of milk yesterday and she drank every drop. she is really obsessed with drinking anything.

side note - are your babies eating cereal with a spoon themselves? i think my DS was almost using a spoon by himself now but i haven't really worked with it much with DD and she would rather use her fingers and turn the bowl upside down on her head anyway

Sounds like she is good to go if she needs an alternative to a BF :)

My baby is 18mo now so yes he is eating cereal with a spoon ;) I know he could do it on holiday back in October when he was 14mo but I think that was about when he started being able to manage foods he had to scoop up (like rice crispies or cheerios) before that he would dip it in runny food like weetabix or porridge. He still turns it to one side and drops bits off it even now. I do think it is all about practice though. If they haven't had the opportunity to get messy with the spoon they will need time to get the hang of it, yk?

i know she could prob do it. today i was mopping her spilt milk off the floor with a rag and she found a paper towel and starting copying me & wiping the floor. so cute....

ok that has nothing to do with the above except it involved milk ;)

And if she's copying cleaning chances are she'll copy eating with cutlery too :)
