Should I cap naps?
« on: March 09, 2013, 12:32:21 pm »
Little man is nearly 8 months first A time is around 3 hours then he naps lately it has been two hours plus, I have been waking him around 2 20 otherwise it's getting so his second nap is too late and I've been having to wake him from that too, what's the general opinion? It seems cruel to wake him

What's your EASY like before/without capping? Is the amount/distribution  of daytime sleep causing problems at night? Are you getting nap/bedtime resistance or early waking etc..? If not I'm tempted to say don't fix what isn't broken!

Not sure to be honest this is a fairly recent thing. We have been getting early wake ups and he has a df and nf still that I am realising I need to drop as I guess he's too old for these really problem was he has reflux so only wants to feed at night still. He has been better recently on new mess so I think that's just habit now. Here's what usually happens-

0600-0640 ish wake up
0930-1000 nap
Been waking him around 12-13000
Nap around 1500
Waking him after 1hr 30
1900 bed
2240 df (hoping to drop sometimes he wakes before this for a feed)
Usually another nf between 2 and 4
Wakes usually between six and half six although was five for a few days

Perhaps I should leave him sleep see what happens?

He may need longer sleep during the day due to nights, he's getting 11+ at night but with the 2 feeds so not a full 11hrs IYSWIM? I think it probably depends what you want to do about the night feeds. I know they say that night sleep is more restorative than daytime but if you feel he needs to keep the night feeds at present due to milk intake etc.. then I would be tempted not to cap day sleep unless you are hitting problems by doing so (EW, nap/bedtime resistance etc..). You may find that once he drops/you wean NF then his nights shorten and you need to look at capping at that point to address it. The other thing to consider is how he is during the day? Is he quite a settled, happy little chap or does he get cranky, that would push me more towards working on dropping NF to improve night sleep which may involve capping one of the naps. But as I said in my oppinion if it isn't broke don't try and fix it. If he functions fine on his current night sleep and uncapped naps don't create problems I would roll with it, he may just be high sleep needs (lucky you!). I have a LSN 1 year old so am not speaking from experience just what I would do in your situation. Hope someone with BTDT experience can offer their pearls of wisdom!
Have you tried dropping the df at all or are you keeping it due to weight gain/reflux issues?

He takes so little by day that I was continuing it but have been considering trying to get rid of it and nf and have been posting about that too. Recently he hasn't been waking for it which he usually does before or around the time it's due so we left him sleep last night and he didn't wake til four! Had 4 oz then, woke again at five settled again til six fifteen and eventually up for the day at quarter to seven.

Yey for sleeping through til 4! If you are getting some good support with dropping NF and increasing day intake then I would work on that and see how it leaves him night time wise and if you find after that you are left with EW and short nights look at capping one of the naps. How does that sound? I wouldn't cap until there is a need for it.
