5 month old night wakenings after STTN for 6 weeks
« on: March 13, 2013, 13:06:20 pm »
DS2 started sleeping from 7 to 7 at 15 weeks much to our relief, as we had been following the EASY routine since he was a few weeks old. In the last week, he has been wakening during the night, one night he re-settled himself but the other nights I have had to go in and have ended up feeding him 2-3 oz of formula. He was BF for the first 3 months, and then since then, fully on formula, taking 8 oz every 4 hours and sometimes a little top-up just before bedtime if I think he is hungry. His routine looks like this:

E 7am - 8 oz
A 7.20
S 9am - normally for 2 hours, sometimes I have to waken him at that point
E 11am - 8 oz
A 11.30
S 1pm - in pram or car seat, 1 hour max
A 2pm
E 3.45pm - 8 oz
A 3.55
S 4pm - waken him after 1 hour
A 5pm - bath at 6.20
E 6.40 - 8 oz
S 7pm

If we are In the house for both naps, he will do two 2 hour naps, but normally we are out for one of these naps which means its on average 1 hour, hence why his cat nap is normally 1 hour to try to make up for the shorter nap. If he gets the two 2 hour naps then I cut the cat nap after 40 mins.

I don't rush in when I hear him at night, but then his cry escalates and I usually try medicine as he has a cold and appears to be teething. I then hold him and try to calm him before lying him down again, and seeing if he will resettle but he doesn't and then I try feeding and sometimes he will take 3 oz, other times just one. I tried baby rice last week thinking he must be hungry but he is not quite ready for it, as he just spits it out. So do I try introducing another bottle during the day or squeeze in a small feed early evening? I thought the obvious thing would be to get him on solids but as I say I think he is just a few weeks off from that stage. Any help is much appreciated as always - thanks !

What time in the night is he waking? It could actually be genuine hunger - calorie needs change frequently at this age and what works some weeks might not work others.  That being said, you may also be headed towards dropping the cat nap -- though with that good long first nap I wouldn't think that would be the culprit just yet.  You may need to reduce the cat nap, regardless of whether or not he's taken a good earlier nap.

Squeezing in a small early evening feed might be a great idea if the waking is due to hunger.  Contrary to what most people think, solids don't generally help babies sleep at night -- formula/breast milk is much richer in fat and calories and is better for babies anyway.  :)
