5 month old night waking - HELP please!
« on: May 11, 2013, 20:29:21 pm »
Hi there

This is my first post and I really hope someone can help. My five month old wakes up every four hours and has never slept longer than this - I'm shattered and desperate for more sleep.

Here are the answers to your questions so hopefully this should help.

How old is your child?  21 weeks

What’s his/her daily routine?
  E 7am - expressed breast milk approx 200mls
S 9 ( this could be anything from 45 mins to 2 hours). I never let him sleep longer than 2 hours. If he wakes after 45 mins ill shush/pat for a further 30mins. If it doesn't work ill get him up.
E 11 - expressed breast milk approx 200mls and solids. He's only had solids for two weeks and is eating about 2 tablespoons of fruit or veg purées plus 20mls of cooled boiled water.
S 1 (same duration differences as above)
  E 3 formula approx 200mls
  S 5 for 45 mins
  A 6 bath
  E 6.45 formula 200mls
  S 7
  E 10.30 formula 200mls

What’s nap routine?
Although I aim for the above nap times I'll put him to bed should he start to look tired. We go to the bedroom, wave good bye to everyone, close the curtains, put him in his sleep suit, hold him and gentle sway whilst singing the same two lullabies. After 5 mins I put him in his cot. Sometimes this is shorter as he starts to fall asleep. If he's still quite awake I put him in the cot on his side, put his dummy in and quietly shush/pat. After 5 mins I leave. Sometimes he falls straight to sleep but mostly I have to re-enter and shush-pat again. He then falls asleep.

How long are naps?  See above

What's bedtime routine? Time? Bed time is bath, bottle and then the same routine as the nap.

Do you bottle or breastfed?? I was breast feeding exclusively for 4 months but he was waking every 2 hours! Now I combination feed.

How much? He takes an average of 950mls per day plus 20-50 mod if water nod 2/3 tablespoons of solid food.

How many wakes per night? 2.30/3 am and I can shush-pat him asleep and replace his dummy. And then 4 am when he's starving. I've tried PU/PD for an hour and in the end either breast feed him or bring him into our bed where he promptly falls asleep!

What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up?
He shouts!
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry? He shouts

Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones?
He has just learned to roll and is teething

My LO is also very big. He is 9.7kg (22lbs) which is why I had to introduce formula as he was constantly hungry!

Thanks so much for your help!!

Hi there!
I think that once his naps will be better then it will affect night as well, although it seems that he is waking to feed only once at night which is actually really good. My DS was also a very big baby and there was no way to not have a NF... It took us a while to stop with them and even then it was gradually.
If your A time is right now 2h then it could be too short for him and I would work on gradually increasing it IIWY. At 5m he should be closer to 2.5h A time.
Don't jump to that straight away because he might get OT, but you can increase it by 10min every 3-4 days till you are not getting 45min naps anymore and his A time is more around 2.5h.
What do you think?

Thanks so much for the reply. I will start increasing his A time and see if this has an effect on his naps which hopefully will affect his night sleep.

I'll let you know how it goes!!

Hi there

I just wanted to give you an update.

It's been brilliant!! I took your advice but also complemented it with a proper pupd effort. I realised, after reading the posts on this forum, that I never really saw pupd through properly so never saw results. My LO has now slept through the night 3 nights now and on the nights he hasn't he's only woken up once or twice and I only have to replace his dummy and he's straight back to sleep.

Thank goodness for the baby whisperer!!
Thanks for your help
Xx
