11 month sleeps 10 hours at night
« on: May 13, 2013, 12:15:23 pm »
Hello, I've been to this forum 2 times before and both times it had to do with sleep. I've never seemed to get it under control. But now I'm sooo tired that I have little patience and it's getting hard for me to deal with.
My 11 month old sleeps 10 hours at night and will only sleep one hour at a time. I think it's possible that he is not learned to help him back to sleep, but I am not sure. He use to sleep 12 hours at age 4&5onths, we went on a week vacation where we all had I sleep in the same room and ever since I've never been able to get him back on the right track.
Intried he wake to sleep method and it worked for a week, I tried it again and it either woke him up or he woke up on his own the hour before his normal wake up time.
His EASY schedule goes something like this:
5-6 a.m. Awake (sometimes 4:30) (I try for 45 minutes to get him back to sleep, I hold him, or try to justly my hand on him in the crib, but generally He likes to be held, but he's ways wide awake, eyes open, he refuses to close them
6:20 eat
10:00 nap
11:00 awake/eat
13:00-14:00 nap
15:00 awake/eat
18:00-19:00 eat
Bath
19:00-20:00 bed

Generally he is up at 5-5:30 am every morning, I'm lucky if he wakes up around 6.
I tried lengthening his awake time but he still will only nap one hour, so I continue to nap him 2-3 times because otherwise he'll only have the one nap that day, be really cranky at night and them goes to bed for the night too early and the vicious cycle starts over.
His nap is one hour no matter what I do.
I'm at my wits end!!! Please help!!!
I know 10 hours at night isn't enough for him.
I think about buying a white noise machine...?
I can't wake up these hours anymore I'm going to lose my mind. And it makes me impatient with him and I don't like that one bit.
Thank you for any help.

IMO, this is the key to the problem. You don't manage to get out of the vicious cycle but in order to get out of it you'd need to tweak A times and you might have some OT rough days in the beginning. But this is not something one can avoid, it just has to be done.
He is going through now the transition from 2 naps to 1, but he is only at the beginning of it. So what we are aiming for is for him to have one nap that is capped and the other one longer. Mommies choose different - some prefer short AM long PM naps and some the other way around. Tracey recommended capped AM long PM nap, but we did it the other way around and it also worked well for us.
You can read about it more here: 10 to 12 mth old Sleep Gone Wonky, and the 2 - 1 Nap Switch
If he wakes up at 5 right now then I would aim for something like this:
5 WU
9-9:45 nap
13:30-15:30 nap
20 BT

This can vary a lot, depends on the baby. It might be that he'd need a shorter A time for the second A to not get OT and that the A before BT is either longer or shorter. These are just things you'd need to try out.
Don't be afraid if after two days he still does 2 short naps, it will take him time to get used to it all.
However, I would jump with the A time all at once. I see that you already have 4h a time in the morning so I would leave it at that, it's looks good to me but I would work on extending his second A time by 15min every 3 days till he is doing more like 3h. The first nap should probably be capped at 45min as well.
What do you think?

I agree.  I need I lengthen his A time. But how can I get him to sleep longer at night? I would like it if he slept 12 hours, he use to at 4-5 months old and we went on a one week vacation and it's been 10 hours ever since. He is waking up way too early. It's still dark out! Thanks :)

You won't get rid of the NW and the EW unless you increase A time, it's all connected to each other.
