When to cut naps?
« on: July 26, 2013, 07:16:40 am »
My LO has just turned 2 and has been a good sleeper for a while. She usually has 10.5-11hrs at night undisturbed and always has her nap at 12.30-2 regardless of when she wakes (we have to wake her from this). She normally goes up to bed about 7.40pm and would be asleep by 8pm. She happily sings herself to sleep and doesn't need patting or rocking. She would then wake up anywhere between 6.30am and 7.30am.

But I have noticed over the last couple of weeks that it is taking her longer and longer to fall asleep. I've tried taking her up a bit earlier or a bit later but she can still take up to an hour to go to sleep. She still will sing herself to sleep so the only problem is that I have to wake her in the morning (I never let her sleep past 7.45am) and she can be tired. Last night it was 8.45pm before she was asleep.

The other day at nursery she only had 55m nap but still took until 8.30pm to go to sleep. What should I be doing? I'm not really sure what to try!

I forgot to say that she always goes down for her nap no bother. Usually within 5 mins she will be asleep!

Sorry, I'm not sure I'll be much help. Just wanted to let u know that my ds did the same thing. We were suggested to cut his nap. We cut it down to 2 hrs. He was sometimes sleeping up to 3 hrs. We also increased his activity level. We went to the park and a walk every day. We were also told that it might have been a verbal growth spurt. Ds would take 1-4 hrs to fall asleep when he used to fall asleep in 10-15min. He struggled off and on for about a month and it just passed. Just wanted u to know that u r not alone...

Has she always been quite low sleep needs? 1.5hrs nap plus 10.5hrs overnight is quite low for her age. If you do cap the nap you'd need to give it a good few days before it 'settled in'. Increasing activity during the day is definitely a good idea.

She only started sleeping through the night at about 14 months and has always slept between 10.5 and 11 hours. I have been waking her after 1.5hrs for a while now as if she has too much we have night wakings. I have just put her down for her nap and although she usually goes straight asleep, she is bouncing up and down in her bed!

Is the fact she is taking so long to go to sleep a sign she is overtired or under tired? What should her day look like at her age? She has always had a 13 hour day and 11 hour night!

It could be a development thing, my lo has recently turned 2 + started taking a while to go to sleep for her nap just talking + talking. Seems to be heading back to normal now just the occasional day + definitely helps when she's done more in the mornings so she's more tired.x

I would say undertired. I would push her nap back to 1.30 and let her nap for an hour, and see if that helps.

There's definitely a developmental element. There can be really odd sleep behaviour for that reason. My LO1 started singing in the cot for aaaaaaaaaages around age 2.  But he did go back to conking out, so keep an eye on her for changes.

The other day at nursery she only had 55m nap but still took until 8.30pm to go to sleep. What should I be doing? I'm not really sure what to try!
I think in that case she may have got very OT and taken a long time to unwind.  If her nap at nursery is that short, you could try an early bedtime (6pm? earlier?).

Well for the past few days she has refused her nap (which she has never done before) and fallen asleep about 2pm. I've only let her have half an hour though and then got her up. I'm just sitting here listening to her again. It's so annoying as I know if I get her up then she will want to sleep when I walk to the shops this afternoon. I can't do early bedtime as she only ever sleeps 11hours so if I put her down at 6 she will be up at 5 at the latest!

How long do you wait before giving up on nap and taking them out of the cot?

I know you say she only sleeps 11hrs at the most but I think you'll have to try an early bedtime again if she's dropping the nap!

Personally I let them roll around for 45 mins and then give up on the nap. Although I'd leave her in her cot if she's happy up there!

Well she woke up at 7.15am this morning and has refused a nap (even in the pram) so I thought I'd put her down at 7.15pm which is early for her and she is happily singing and bouncing up and down in her cot! I don't understand!!

I suspect she got a second wind and probably needed an earlier bedtime. Fingers crossed for tonight!
