What's the deal with AF and BF'ing?
« on: July 29, 2013, 10:41:18 am »
(Not sure if this should be here, in health, or in P&C....  ::) )

I am 8.5 weeks PP, bloody discharge this morning - is this AF? DS2 is exclusively BF.

Am I right in thinking AF can return at any point? Some mum's do when BF'ing, some don't?

Mine came back at 6wks, which I remember specifically because it was the day of my 6wk pp appointment!  DD was mostly ff, but I was still ebf at that point so I was surprised.  But, like happy, I know plenty of people who didn't get AF for ages or until they stopped BFing.

He does do some decent stretches at night, and I think over the past couple of weeks we've probably gone from 8-10 bfs a day to 6-8. Perhaps that's why. Doesn't seem to have progressed since this morning, no more than blood on wiping really.

Mine came at 11 weeks but it wasn't a proper one and only lasted a few days and nothing since. Mine is ebf but i started spacing feeds around that time (1.5-2hourly) and before that i was feeding whenever...

I got mine at 6-7 weeks every time and that was ebf with no long stretches of sleep... And regular as clockwork from then on. Unlucky but it can happen.

Mine came back at about 7 months when we stopped the dream feed and so I wasn't feeding for ~12 hrs overnight. Was still ebfing during the day though.

I know other friends who've not had AF return for much longer though, until they were BFing much less.

At 8.5 weeks it could still be PP bleeding and not AF.

I was thinking it was maybe still pp bleeding, like when you get one of those gushes after having nothing for awhile?  But obviously it could be AF, even with EBF.  That would suck if it is!  It's taken longer with each child to return for me, 8mos after DS1, 10mos after DS2, and DD is 13mos and still no AF.  I know I must be pretty lucky!

Yeah I was wondering if it was just pp bleeding still. But, I think we're safe to say its old Aunt Flo - got much heavier, and I have the hormones to go with it!

Ugh, if it's gotten heavier than it does sound like AF.  So sorry!!  I have so enjoyed these past 5.5years where I have been pregnant and/or BFing and have not had to deal with AF much, and I am so dreading it's return because I know that I'm stuck with it for years to come!!  :P
