Twins say No to milk in cups! Help?
« on: August 03, 2013, 19:40:49 pm »
Hi Ladies

I've 15 month old twin boys who are resolutely refusing my attempts to get them to drink milk from cups not bottles.

They drink water fine from any type of spout cup but put milk in it and they just pull a face and reject it. I've tried cows milk in a new cup to try the its new its different idea....no. I've tried watering down the milk to try and sneak it in there....no.... Any ideas how to tackle it please would be much appreciated.

Thanks again :)

Keep offering! Do you give them milk in a bottle if they refuse? How many bottles are they still having and when? It might help to get rid of bottles completely then they have no choice at all but if you keep offering they will accept it eventually.

Don't forget as toddlers they don't *need* liquid milk, they can get the 12-14oz of dairy they need from foods and if they are drinking water they won't get dehydrated.

Have you tried an open cup? Maybe a mug.  And I agree if they don't want it let hem go without. The other thing I did was give hot choc and then slowly put less and less in until it was just milk. No added sugar though.

Thanks for the help :) I've tried both not giving them the bottle and then other times I've just given them the bottle. My main worry in them not having the milk is with sleeping. I had a really tough time getting decent sleep from them one especially and I cling onto anything that seems to give me that you know  :-[
I will try the open cup it's a good idea they've not tried that.

Should I transition to cows milk first do you think by the way?

Thanks again

Jo

How much formula are they having now? If there are no issues with dairy then yes, transition them  to cow's milk. If they are having too much milk that will cut their appetite for solids which is more likely to have an impact than not enough milk. That said, toddlers very rarely wake from hunger, it's more likely to be routine related.

They have a bottle at breakfast say 6/7oz then one mid-afternoon about the same then one at bedtime of about 8oz. The afternoon one they seem to be only taking about 3oz at the moment and they have great appetites and eat loads!

I would just offer the afternoon one in a cup then! They are getting more than they need with the other 2 bottles especially as they are eating well too! That's great!

One thing to keep in mind is that swapping to cow's milk can make some toddlers a bit constipated while they adjust to it, some find it better to swap gradually - so swap 1oz of formula for cow's milk in both bottles, then swap another oz a couple of days later then another oz etc.

Hi,

My DS refused to take milk in a cup, even when we finished with bottles - he happily takes water all day but won't take milk.  I just make sure he get dairy plenty of other ways.  He's been like this since 16 months old (was still on one bottle then).  Now 18 months old and a water drinker only.
