8 month old night waking - previously sleep trained
« on: August 07, 2013, 19:44:22 pm »
Help!  My 8 month old will not sleep through the night and is waking 2-3+ times in the night.  She has always been a horrible sleeper. She was sleep trained around 3 months to sleep on her own using sh/pat method and it worked well (we were rocking/holding to sleep).  Then around 6 months she was waking every hour after loosing her paci so we did some more training to rid the paci and replaced this with a bunny.  She then slept fine on her own, still waking 1-2 times per night.  However I'm afraid we have now made a bottle a prop.  She won't go back to sleep in the night unless she is given a bottle.  She was waking at the same time every night, continues to do so but it may vary approx 1 hr.  He bedtime routine:

7:30 - sleep
between 10:00-11:45 - awake, bottle and back to sleeping
between 1:30-2:00 - awake, try to avoid bottle but sometimes giving her a bottle
between 3 - 5 she wakes again and bottle.
she isn't waking up consistantly at the same time in the morning either.  Today was up at 6, yesterday 7:30, previously 8.

I have gone back to to work 2 days ago and i'm pregnant again.  Hubby and I need our sleep and don't know what to do, help please!?

I should add that LO is eating solids.  Eats very well 3 meals and 1 -2 snacks.  Has approx 3-4 bottles per day of 5 oz.  She was teething and now has 2 bottom front teeth.  She naps well during the day, in the morning around 9:30-10 for 1+ hour and in the afternoon 2:00 for 1-2 hours.

(((Hugs)))

Sounds like she might be dependant on the bottle to fall back asleep at night :-\. I would probably look at using PD to help her settle when she wakes at night and slowly start reducing the night feeds. So you could pick a night feed where you will feed her (at this age, dd1 still had 1 night feed, around midnight) and for the other wake ups, use PD to help her learn that she won't be fed to sleep at night anymore. It may be a rough couple of nights but that's the only way she will learn.

Also, I am thinking you need to set her biological clock a little and have a set wake up time....as opposed to variable wake up time so that you reset her clock, which will also help. Our av A time at that age was around 3-3.5 hrs, and if she sleeps wellfor you during the day, then i wouldnt change anything at this stage....other than waking her up at the same time  ;)

So something like this
7 am - wake up
10-11.30- morning nap
2.30-4 afternoon nap
7.30- bedtime

I've attached a link which may help you How to PU/PD (inc age adaptations)

Let me know what you think  :)

Thanks so much for your info, I think we will try start it tonight and see how it goes.  My hubby is worried that baby is having night terrors and that may also be why she is waking up.   He has been getting up with his the past few nights and said that she's crying/screaming with her eyes closed.  Last night she wouldn't wake up and he couldn't console her.   How can you tell if a baby is having bad dreams or night terrors at night?

Night terrors in our house would only occur when my girls were overtired so it is possible that is the case with your LO as well.

Here is a link that will describe the difference between night terrors and nightmares

Please let me know how you go tonight... like I said earlier, it will be exhausting couple of nights (or maybe more) but we're here to help you through it ;D :-*
