Water for 7 weeks old in very hot weather
« on: August 12, 2013, 13:40:00 pm »
Hi
We are on holiday in the south of france where its 35c. Should i be giving water in between feeds? There is evian water for babies here recommended by pediatricians. I am scared that DD will get dehydrated but at the samectime dont want to fill her tummy with water and no milk. Some of her feeds have been hort :2-3 minutes or 6 minutes.
Thanks for any replies

I wouldn't think there would be any need, your milk will adjust to provide more of the thirst-quenching fore milk - but you may need to feed more frequently. I BF my LO in Thailand where it was regularly that hot, and I never gave water. At that age she would have been on roughly a 3hr EAS, having her main feeds on WU, but on hot days I would offer the breast before naps as well or earlier if she was sweaty and fussy, and she might suck for a few mins or she might refuse. I figured those short feeds were her thirst feeds, and longer feeds were hunger.
If your LO is going through her usual number of wet and dirty nappies, you shouldn't have any concern with dehydration.

Don't forget to stay well hydrated yourself too. Enjoy France!

What Papaya said ^^^^^

Just BF more frequently. Breast milk is an amazing thing and all your baby needs for the first 6 months. Only Formula fed babies need water before 6mo. Once you start solids after 6mo you can offer water in a sippy with meals.

What they said. Short, frequent feeds are not a big issue in a hot climate.
