Having trouble with naps! 12.5 months and transitioning?
« on: August 21, 2013, 03:49:23 am »
Hi,
I was hoping someone could advise me on my easy
Schedule. I have read te two to one nap forum and I'm trying to figure out if my LO is actually ready for that or is it a blip week!?
He wakes at 7. Usually I wake him up. He was doing amazingly well at 10 and 2 for his naps. Having 1.5 in the morning and then 2 in the afternoon. Now all hell has broke loose!

His first nap I have pushed to 1030 as he was crying when I put him down which is unusual. I have started to cap at 1 hr and today at 45mins. But when he woke he was cranky and seemed tired.
His afternoon nap happened at 230 and he went down pretty well. Five mins of crying and then he only slept for 1 hour (short for him. But he also has a cold and is teething).
But bedtime was totally off!? I put him down for 730 (tryin to extend his time as someone suggested to 4 hours from his 2nd nap). He screamed bloody murder and I tried to soothe him but no luck. I got him up and he was energetic and climbing around when I was trying to read to him. Then I tried again to out him down at 8pm and he screamed for 22 mins with me going back in and trying to soothe. Eventually he fell quiet at 822.
I'm back and forth whether he's not tired or is overtired. I have no clue what to do!?

Hi there honey, first things first, if your LO is suffering with teething or a cold there is sadly not much you can achieve by tweaking the routine to make things better, it may just pass a the cold & teething do. Are you medicating to ease any teething discomfort?

As you begin the 2-1 you'll need to decide whether you're going to keep a short first nap and long second or vice versa. From your notes it seems you were capping the first nap. If you're going to do that, you don't really want to make it a full A time prior to the nap. Ideally, he'll be going down for the nap a little UT and then should be sufficiently restored by the CN to make it through to the afternoon longer nap. So maybe try sticking to 10am but waking him up after 45mins?

If this works, I would then work on extending that second A time to get a good long nap in the afternoon and then hopefully keep a good night. You might find the day needs to lengthen for a while as this process settles.

Hope that helps x

Thanks. Yes, he's been teething for sometime before this sleep stuff happened but its definitely part of the sleep issues I'm sure. I am medicating him and it seems to help. He's not waking from pain or crying so that's good. But he seems to just have hanged suddenly.
Yesterday he woke at 830pm because he didnt settle until 830pm the not prior because of struggling with naps in the day. So I put him down for his first nap at 1230 and he went no problem. He slept until 345! So I just kept him up until bedtime at 730. Everything was great.
Then today he woke at 7am, I put him down four hours later like the previous day which went well. No crying. Hoping he would have a long nap again until 2, I didn't cap it but then he woke at 1245!!! So that threw everything off because I knew he wouldn't even make it until 6 tonight and I can't put him to bed any earlier than that for the night. So I had to wait until 445 and even then he wasn't too tired. He cried hard for about five mins and had gone quiet.
So I guess I'll cap his nap at 20 or 30 mins so that I can keep his bedtime at 745 hopefully?
Gosh.... It's hard because he is really extending his awake time but its hard holding two naps without his bedtime becoming 830-9!
Tomorrow ill try four hours again and put him down at 11. Then cap it at 1130. Second nap would be 330-5? Then bed at 830-9? See its so tough. I'd rather him just do one long nap but its like he's not quite there yet.
What do u think? Try to put him down at 1030 even if he cries?

I think also maybe it will have to be two naps one day an then one nap the other. For example, if tonight he doesn't go down until 8-830 then he will likely sleep until 830. I could so one nap again at 1230 and even if he sleeps until 230 I can get him to a 630 bedtime. But then the following he will wake at 630-7 and it will require two naps.
Will that mix him up?

Mixing up one and two nap days works really well for some LOs and for others causes problems with EWs and short naps, but we won't know how your LO will react until you try it so if it works for you why not give it a try.
