Ex-prem 12 month old goes down for naps, but bedtime...
« on: August 31, 2013, 20:17:23 pm »
Dear all,
My Noah is 12 months old (corrected) but really is still more of a baby than a toddler, so I'm posting here. His EASY:
Wake anywhere 6.20-7, will play happily by himself until 7 or thereabouts
E: bottle 7, fruit and yoghurt 8.30
A: will include school run in pram as of next week!
S: 10.30-12 or 12.30
E: 12.30 lunch, bottle 3.30
A: will include school run
S: 3.45-4.45
E: 6.30 dinner, 7.30 bottle and bed

Yes, this is a very weird schedule. It's evolved in order to fit the school run, and seems to be working so far.

The problem is that though he goes down beautifully for naps and wakes happy and babbling, getting him to sleep at bedtime is insane. We wind down by going upstairs, doing his sats (he is on oxygen at night due to being three months early, no other medical issues), reattach his cannula and take a bath, which he adores. Put on pyjamas and grobag, have a bottle in his room, then look out the window for a bit to settle, then put into cot. He is insanely fidgety, so we have to hold his arms down. He doesn't cry-he chats, wiggles, scuffs his feet, tries to roll around, kicks, swings his legs round to catch his toes in the slats of the cot and leverage himself sideways (THROUGH the grobag)... It takes a minimum of 40 minutes to finally get him to drop off. When he wiggles too much we do PU/PD, but it is of minimal help. Once he is down, he sleeps through and very rarely wakes, although he rolls all over the place like a weasel!

Any suggestions and/or ideas gratefully received. It's been a couple of months now, and we are knackered.

Thank you!

I think he is likely UT at BT. After an hour nap being awake for less than 3 hours isn't going to make him tired enough to sleep. Even for his corrected age his A time is quite low.

I'd cut his afternoon nap down to 45 minutes and see does that help and if not try 30 minutes.

Here is a link to sample routines for others his age if they are of any help.
Sample EASY Routines from 0 - 13mths+

And at this age a lot of LOs start to make the transition to needing a change in their nap as they start moving toward 1 nap.

From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

I'm also just popping this over to toddler sleep as all LOs over 12 months go over there x

Hello! Thanks for replying so quickly. My husband and I agree that he's undertired...he's just up for a good natter and a major wriggle (he is by far the most fidgety, wriggly child I've ever seen). We have been tempted just to try for one long nap, but he doesn't actually fit any of the criteria set out in the link you mentioned. He is just constantly on the go, never very whiny and always pretty cheerful. I think he'd be okay, but we'd have to teach him to lengthen his nap (2 hours are rare, usually more like 1 1/2) and see if we can get one big one? How do you fit school runs and baby naps together? Thanks again!
