We may be okay with peanuts! UPDATE Sept 18th
« on: September 10, 2013, 03:41:07 am »
DD has been kept free of peanuts because of a family history (2 nephews/1 niece with anaphylaxis to peanuts)...

So we were at our first day of Strong Start (early learning program in our public schools for kids 0-5 yrs)... teacher had a new sensory item: bird seed in a monster tub with shovels etc for the kids to dig... She does know that I have kept DD nut-free for good reason and after kidlet has been digging for about 10 mins, teacher cheerfully announces that she had looked everywhere for nut-free seed... no go apparently but not to worry, she has hand-picked all of the peanuts out... OMG.

I thought everyone knew that peanut protein is like kryptonite!  Well... no reaction!

We were back today for another session and DD played in the seeds again (I even dug around and pulled out a couple of peanuts the teacher missed).. still no issues!

Next steps??  Help....

UPDATE Sept 18: So, I gave the kid a few bites of my Quaker brand Dipps granola bar yesterday... No big deal right?!  Yeah, totally not except that this morning when I ate one I thought it tasted like it was peanuty... checked the label - hmmm... not the "may contain" list.. just the "Does contain list" Peanuts being contained... oh dear!  They are the very last ingredient in the list of everything in them... no reaction.

Do I assume we are okay with the whole seed table/granola bar combo now?  Or should I keep offering tiny bits?

To be honest I would just go and give her peanuts!  If you are really concerned (or live in a rural location) I would do it while sitting in the Emergency Room.  There is also the option of just touching peanut butter, or a peanut, to her lips and see if there is a reaction.  Since you have already done the "skin contact", to me that would be the next step...

Thanks Nadia!  Not rural per se (about 90,000 people here) but I am thinking the ER would be a good idea!

Yes wouldn't risk it if there is a history in the family. And of course they do say that reactions can occur at any time and particularly after the first or second exposures.

That's my worry BB.. bad reactions are after multiple exposures... will keep with the playing in the peanut protein infested bird seed at playschool for now!  I just really think I would be more comfortable if she could tell me that her throat was tickly!

Sorry hun x

It won't be long before she can tell you- she doesn't tell you if she feels poorly yet? Maybe start talking to her about any reactions she could have. Help her to recognise any if they do occur to her. Maybe her dollies could get tickly throats or hives?

BB - did you read my update?  She had a granola bar with peanuts in it - by accident!  But no reaction :)

Ah, didn't think to look there! Can't answer question I'm afraid as I don't know anything about nut seed allergies.

On a similar note, olly had a prawn this week with no reaction!

YAY for prawns!!!  Good job Olly!

I have now given my kidlet a bit of sunflower seeds that contain peanut oil (assume they are roasted in it) = no reaction!
