Breast milk vs formula!?
« on: September 15, 2013, 16:44:26 pm »
Hi there
My DS is 7 weeks old and I am currently using EBM for feeds. I also give him the occasional formula bottle.
When is too early/ an ok time to sop breast feeding/breast milk feeds and just go with formula?
Cheers

Honestly....it is whatever works best for you and baby! I did mixed feeding with my older DD's as I can't pump effectively enough but I wanted DH to be able to do the bedtime feeding to give me a break so that one was formula.  Not sure what I will do this time as my kids want to feed the baby but I'm not really wanting to do formula as things are going so wel with bf.

What Heidi said.

Is there any particular reason you're wanting to stop BF?  Personally I found it a lot more convenient than having to clean/sterilise bottles and make up formula.

The reason I ask is that I am currently expressing breast milk and then bottle feeding. Our DS was a bad feeder on the breast and took to a bottle soooo well. It made it easier to keep him happy and settled by feeding from a bottle. But now I am finding this process of expressing and feeding quite tiring and time consuming. I do put him on the breast every new and again to see if anything has changed but not really. S I am tempted to just use formula.

I jut have the mothers guilt I suppose that I am doing the wrong thing for my baby. It would be different if I didn't have enough milk or could feed him breast milk at all but I can.... It's just harder.

If you're undecided whether it is worth it maybe these posts will help you make an informed decision.

Only you can decide what is right for you and your LO. I commend you for pumping and BFing. You should be proud :)

Indeed, you're doing well to pump.
Are you able to see a BF specialist to try to work out why he's having trouble latching on and maybe give you some help to overcome that?  It may be that it's something really easily fixed and I'd hate for you to stop feeding and feel bad without having explored all avenues.
