How to extend naps for 10 month old?
« on: September 17, 2013, 10:41:07 am »
My 10 month old short naps unless she naps in a swing. Her usual time on a bed or crib is 20 minutes per nap. In a swing or when asleep in a car seat when we drive, she can nap up till 1.5 hours. Applying pressure /touching while napping on bed/crib doesn't seem to work so far. Shes up in 20-25 minutes. Any other methods?

Hi there,

If she's always slept in the swing or car for naps, sounds like it may be a prop and in this case you will probably have to sleep train her using pu/pd method. To be honest, there is no quick fix solution and she may well have short naps until she learns how to put herself to sleep and transition between sleep cycles. If your goal is for her to sleep in the cot, I would do ALL naps in the cot for the next 2 weeks to get her used sleeping there. At 10 months, her A times could be anywhere from 3.5-4hrs and it can also be the start of 2-1 nap transition (where too long am nap can interfere with pm nap).

Have a look at this link, which will explain what the 2-1 is about: From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

Here is a link to the pu/pd method How to PU/PD (inc age adaptations)

Let me know if you have any questions :)

Lo goes to daycare and they use the swing to put the babies to sleep because they have so many babies there so any of them that have difficulty napping are always put in a swing. I guess there is no hope then unless I use a swing for all naps as well?

((hugs))

I've heard what happens at daycare stays at daycare so if she's there full time, it may be a matter of you sleep training her on the weekends...I don't have any BTDT experience as my girls didn't attend childcare until they were over 3yo but I'll see if I can get someone who has  :)

Is she in daycare full time?

Yes she is in daycare for the whole day on weekdays while I am at work. She is only at home with me full day for Saturday and Sunday

It is possible for your baby to learn to sleep one way at daycare but you would have to be pretty consistent with teaching her independent sleep when she's at home. It would be better though if daycare would follow the same technique as you but they would also need to be fairly consistent.
