Moderating qs

I'm asking this 'out loud' in case the info is of benefit to others.

Can someone talk me through how moderating works, please? How much time involved? Is it an 'invitation-only' or 'all volunteers welcome' kind of post?

All I know atm is that there's a change-round every three months or so.
