I think I need to admit defeat with sleep training
« on: October 19, 2013, 21:21:34 pm »
This baby will not fall asleep any other way than bring patted, I've tried everything else, the problem is that I spend so much time patting that my other kids are being neglected. And I'm not talking the "oh they spend all day in front of the tv" neglected, I mean the "my 2 yr old managed to run out onto the road again" kind

I can't do this anymore. I've tried and I've tried. Nothing else works and me and three kids alone under the age of 5 just isn't working

How old is he now Jo? If he's hitting 4 mths and his reflux is fully controlled maybe you need to consider PU/pd ???

He will be 4 months on the 23rd. I don't know that the reflux is "fully" controlled but it's about as good as it's gonna get. He's on 5mg omeprazole daily which I think is just about right for his weight, maybe a little more than the normal range for it.

I never did pu/pd with Levi and I never had the stomach for it with caleb, his dad had to do it for me...

I'm presuming you've looked at his routine from what you've said? Do you want us to take a look anyway? When you say you've tried everything can you give us a quick summary of what you've tried to date? Will he be apop'd in anyway (buggy etc..) or does it have to be patting it cot?

yeah his routine is as best as I can get it with the 40 min naps and the school run... so far it generally goes like this

awake anywhere from 6.15-6.45am
E7am
A 1 hour 45 - 2 hours
S 8.15 - 9 (school drop off begins) he wakes himself here even on non school days
A 1 hour 15
S 10.15 - 11
E11
A 1 hour 15/20
S12..20 - 1pm
A 1 hour 20
S 2.20 - 3 (school pickup) wakes himself here regardless
A 1 hour 20
S 3.20 - this is where it starts to unfold, sometimes he will nap here, most times he wont or it will take me half an hour to get him to sleep
most days it ends up he finally falls asleep around 4.30 after a feed
E 4
A ??
E depending on if hes had a nap or not, i will feed at around 5.30/6 in order to get an early bedtime due to no nap
S it can take me around 1 hour and a half every night to get him to sleep at bedtime... finally usually asleep by 7.30

we can have a few nightwakes where I will either resettle him with patting or he will take the dummy
NF - around 11.30 - 1
NF - around 4 - 5.30

you will notice its a bit of a four hour routine, hes only just gone to that but if hes hungry at 3-3.5 hours I will feed him, this routine is pretty similar for the 3 hour routine just adjust the feeds. if he does have a full nap then his full A time is 2 hours most of the time

ok, so he will not feed to sleep at all, hes never done it. he doesnt fall asleep on me or in the mei tai anymore, if he does its for 20mins only. he will only fall asleep in the car if its 3+ hours hes been awake (yes some days its that long) will not fall asleep in the stroller or pram.
room is dark, white noise is loud. Ive tried long wind down, short wind down. longer A time, shorter A times. he is not wrapped or swaddled as he likes to grab his blanket and smoosh it up against his face. his cot is elevated at the head.. he will fall asleep elsewhere but I have to recreate his room, so dark, white noise and again patting. he has a dummy which he uses sometimes but not all the time, in fact he prefers to fall asleep without it but does need it sometimes. for some reason he does not have the ability to hold the dummy in his mouth so he wont fall asleep on his back, hes a tummy sleeper and therefore the dummy stays in place there... i cant think of anything else

Dyt that he is in a loop? After that first 45 min nap maybe try only pulling back the A time 20 mins or so - so instead of 1hr15/20 go for 1hr35/40 - I think maybe he is Ut, then OT by BT YK?

His nights aren't too bad - at the NF does he go straight back  to sleep?

The reflux meds are actually quite low. :-\ 5mg is what T was trialled  on at 6 weeks..it quickly went up, but 10 is an avge dose. 15-20 a high one x

I can try for a longer A time after a short nap :) he just surprised me and slept 2.5 hours tho!!! Had to put the dummy in once at about an hour but yeah don't know what that was all about!

I was thinking of increasing his meds to 10mg... If I go to the dr they will prob say to do that. We aren't under any special care for it yet tho I've asked for a letter to be sent to yhe public hospital for help regarding it.
I gave him 5mg this morning, I might give him another 5mg this afternoon, I used to do that with Levi, split the dosage for the day and it helped

If he has only been prescribed 5mg a day then I think you need to get your GP to give the ok re increasing it to 10mg, even if it's a phone consult. Some kids have side effects on it and if he is showing reflux symptoms then they need to know.

Yay for a good nap!
