My DS is nearly 3 months old and I am trying to get him to sleep in his own cot next to my bed. We had to co-sleep up until now as he wouldn't sleep unless in my arms or in a sling wrap and I wasn't getting any rest. I started from putting him down in his cot during the day and in first week he slept for max 20 min, then next week 30 min and then 40 min. We can't get him past the 40 min mark, it's like he has an alarm clock built in!
Nights are worse, he's waking up every 2 hours and I know he's capable of doing 4-5 and feeding just once around 3 am as this is what's been happening when we slept together.
We're on EASY starting the day around 7 and feeding every 3 hours, nap-length dependant. He was a very alert child from day 1, curious and interested in watching the world and now he stays awake for 1.5 - 2 hours during activity time. He is generally a very good baby, only cries when he's tired or bored, very playful and social, loves being in a bath etc. it's just the sleeping bit that Needs to change, I can't keep falling asleep with him in my arms!

Is he too young for PU/PD? I try shush/pat and swaddling, always in a dark room and sometimes with white noise as well. He falls asleep nicely but the problem is to keep him asleep in his cot, I try to lay him down in second phase but he just wakes up more often than when sleeping with me. Is it just time or can I actually do something now to improve? I still try to feed him once- twice and don't offer him the breast every time he wakes up.

Please help!!!

He is too young for PUPD but it sounds like he responds to shush-pat? I would just keep doing what you're doing - shush pat until he's drowsy (NOT asleep) and then lay him down and shush pat in his cot for a while even if he starts crying. If he gets very upset then pick up and shush pat again in your arms until he's totally calm, and repeat repeat repeat.

I agree with the other person.  Continue shhh-pat, and have faith.  Keep on while they are young especially.

Falling asleep is not really a problem. It's keeping him asleep! He used to do 4-5 hours and last night he was waking up every 20-40 minutes! It's like having a newborn again, I am so tired! Increasing feeds and dream feed don't seem to be changing anything at all. What to do?!

Does he fall asleep independently? What is his routine? Is he refluxy? I would suspect discomfort with wakings that frequent.

Yes, he falls asleep on his own most of the time, has no reflux but does seem to struggle with wind usually between 5-6 in the morning. We have 3 hourly Easy starting from 7am, bedtime around 8-9 pm.

Could you type out a typical day in EASY format so we can see how long his A times are, how long he is napping for etc?

Thanks Anna, here it is:

7am feed
7.30 activity
9.00 - 9.15 - nap for 20-40 min
10 feed
10.30 activity
12-12.30 nap for 20-40 min
1pm feed
1.30 activity
2.30 By this point he is really tired so I go for a walk in his pram or sling wrap and he will sleep till 4 - 4.30pm
4 feed
4.30 activity
6 nap for 20-40 min
I tried partial feeding at 6 and 8 and then dream feed but that didht work at all so instead I feed before and after a bath usually:
7 feed
7.30 - 8.30 bath, he never wants to sleep straight after so:
8.30 feed
Sometimes falls asleep straight away at breast, sometimes it takes up to an hour to put him down. I usually need to hold him until drowsy and then put down and sh/pat in his cot but he often wakes up and need to start all over again. He seems to be in the REM phase for very long time and it takes him a while to fall into deep sleep.

Then wakes at various times and only sleeps for periods of 40 minutes to 2 hours at a time if in his cot. It's been a week of not sleeping with me. I noticed that amount of feeds, length of sleep during the day and time of bedtime don't change the night sleep AT ALL. I'm really running out of options here!

Thank you for your time!

OK so I think I may need you over to one of the other boards - but I need to clarify here, he is falling asleep independently in his cot, yes? i.e. falling asleep all by himself without you in the room? Or is there still a prop issue here of falling asleep in your arms?

Re your routine, he is almost certainly overtired with such short naps and a long day. I would work on cutting back A times so that he is awake for no more than 1.5hrs including shush-pat to get him down to sleep. Also you need his day to be more than 12 hours. So you will do his bath earlier, and a last feed at 6.30 so he can be in his cot asleep for the night by 7pm.

He used to fall asleep in my arms as shush/pat just didn't work at all. It is better now and sometimes he will fall asleep all by himself but I always need to be in a room to reassure and at least keep my hands on his tummy.
I only put him down to sleep during the day when he is tired and shows signs of it, it's not always yawning, he might just rub his eyes or starts complaining. His activity time keeps getting longer but when I tried putting him to sleep earlier he was screaming the place down and still wanted to play. It's almost like he's ready for 4 hourly feeds but it is too early for that, isn't it?
Yesterday he slept for 50 min, then nothing, then 1.h 10 min and then 1h and slept much better at night - did a 3.5h stretch first time since sleeping in his cot. I thought he was overtired at first but noticed that if he sleeps longer during the day (if we're travelling or use a sling/pram more than once) he then wakes up at night with eyes wide open and ready to play. It's much harder to settle him down again. If he sleeps less he goes back to sleep at night after a feed straight away.
He was always a very alert baby, focusing sight on objects in the first week etc so maybe that's just the way he is?

Hun I'm moving you over to the EASY board because I suspect this is a routine issue more than anything else.

Hi there,
I have to agree with Anna, he sounds OT to me and IIWY I would cut back on his A times. 2h is just too much at this age for the majority of babies.
Even a baby on has relatively high A times might not manage a 2h A time at this age.

The waking up at night after sleeping more during the day and seeming alert can be an OT sign as well and OS. OT babies often find it difficult to settle to sleep because they are so hyper and restless.
I would give a shorter A times a go, and try it for a few days - a week and see if it helps.

He is awake for an average of 1.5 h counting from the moment he finishes eating ie feeds from 7 to 7.30 and then goes to sleep around 9-9.15. I always wait for his cues and then it takes him only about 5-10 min to fall asleep. Am I supposed to put him to sleep earlier, when he's perfectly fine playing? I know he should nap for longer but even if I try putting him back to sleep after waking early it doesn't always work and I noticed more sleep during the day (when we travel for example and he has longer naps in the car) doesn't really affect his night sleep. I'll try this week but have very little hope...

A times are counted from eyes open till eyes closed, that includes feeding time and WD.
