Can't get my 3.5 month old past the 30 min nap!
« on: December 28, 2013, 15:34:01 pm »
I'm on day 5 of shhhing and patting my 3.5 month old. He falls right asleep in his own now and if I sit with him when he wakes up we're half hour I can shush and pat him back to sleep in about 10 minutes. We can continue thi cycle for the two hours. Problem is I have a 2 year old and I take care of another two year old. So I need him to get to the point where he gets himself back to sleep! My husband room a week off so I could do nothing but teach Hudson to sleep in his own for two hours but tomorrow is the last day and we're not there yet. I can't sit op here for two hours with two toddlers running  around. Help! Thoughts!? Is he too young? Am I expecting too much? I did this with my older son and it took a week but he was a month older. Advice please?

Hi there and welcome to BW!

30 minute naps are often OT (overtired) so you might want to check if his A time is a bit too long for him. Sorry, can't link as on my phone but if you look in the FAQ you should find something on average A times.  There are also tips for sleep training with a toddler on the go!  With my LO2, I had to accept that I wouldn't be able to focus so much on sleep training, so I would APOP (accidental parenting on purpose) the first nap by getting her up if she woke early in the nap and into a sling or buggy to continue sleeping.  LO1 and I could then go out or play at home. But I also tried to get their afternoon naps to coincide so I could sleep train with LO2 while LO1 was asleep.  And I also grabbed every chance at weekends and so on.

Hope that helps, lots of mamas here have had the same difficulty but it is possible, so take heart!

Thanks:) he goes down really easy and puts himself right to sleep he just doesn't stay asleep:( if I intervene I can usually get him back to sleep fairly quickly. I think I may have to do apop like you suggested because I'm stressing myself out! He wakes up and he will lie there awake for about a half hour not sleeping but not fussing either and after a half hour he'll start getting upset.  I also think I may try to put him in his brothers room for his morning nap since it super dark in there and see if that helps. I don't want to mess too much with his schedule bc he is falling asleep was idly and sleeping great at night. 7:30-4 am drinks 4 oz then bank to sleep till 7 am.
